The search engine drop-down is showing Google and the search string is empty.
If I click the magnifying glass I'm taken here:

http://www.google.com/firefox

But instead I want to go here:

http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en

How can I set that?

In

C:\Documents and Settings\_your_name_here_\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\_your_profile_id_here_\search.json

replace

http://www.google.com/firefox

with

http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en

When I click the magnifying glass with an empty Google search string, I
remain on the current page (no search takes place).

If you only use the Google search engine, you might find it more
convenient to remove the search window entirely (customize your tool bar
and drag it off) and just add a bookmark for the Google advanced search
page to your Bookmarks Toolbar. This arrangement will add no clicks to
your search routine, because right now you have to click the "advanced
search" link on the Google search results page to get you where you want
to be anyway.
