I'm not aware of any Firefox add-on that hasn't pretty much given up the
fight but the online converter/downloader <https://y2mate.com/>, although
somewhat kludgy, still seems to work (although not always reliably at all
resolutions).

Does your question imply that it has to be implemented on top of the Mozilla’s browser? If yes, why? If no, then youtube-dl(1) is _the_ downloader¹ for youtube.com and hundreds (!) other proprietary video and audio hostings and private collections.

¹ Link extractor, actually, as nothing prevents you to watch the stream without waiting until it is downloaded. It is the tool mpv(1) uses to play the fenced media from the Web.

You use the start button only if you've entered a search term. Don't; enter
the URL of the youtube video (and, for speed, insert "pp"--without the quote
marks) between "youtube" and ".com". Available options appear automatically;
click on the relevant download button.

addition I use is called "Easy Youtube Video Downloader Express" and it
is limited to 720P resolution.

(sometimes at least) get vids from Vimeo. https://yd.3dyd.com/home/ ,
portable option available.

Gotta withdraw that recommendation: the site has acquired a nasty infection
that keeps trying to con you into downloading executable malware.

Given up? "Easy Youtube Video Downloader Express"
(https://www.yourvideofile.org/) worked fine just now. Latest update was
on the 7th of this month.
