Has someone found a good way to get rid of this hijackware?
It works through google and yahoo sites. In IE, there is a site
exception area of Tools|Security but I do not see the same in
firefox.

Hijackthis doesn't detect it. Malwarebytes and Spybot also
can't get rid of it.

Not sure I get what you mean, but I use a HOSTS file that blocks
doubleclik.net.

<http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm>

| 127.0.0.1 doubleclick.net #[McAfee.Cookie-Doubleclick]
| 127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net #[MVPS.Criteria]
| 127.0.0.1 ad-g.doubleclick.net
| 127.0.0.1 ad2.doubleclick.net
| 127.0.0.1 ad-yt-bfp.doubleclick.net
| 127.0.0.1 ad.3ad.doubleclick.net
| 127.0.0.1 ad.3au.doubleclick.net
| 127.0.0.1 ad.adx.doubleclick.net
| 127.0.0.1 ad.ae.doubleclick.net
| 127.0.0.1 ad.ar.doubleclick.net
| 127.0.0.1 ad.au.doubleclick.net
...

I also marked doubleclick.net as Untrusted in NoScript and I think I
have subscribed to a list in Adblock Plus that blocks it as well.

I have read everything from using antivirus programs, anti-malware
programs, to throwing your PC through the window, re-formatting, etc.,
etc., Ad nauseum..and I've found the solution..just go to the google
doubleclick website, http://www.doubleclick.com/privacy/dart_adserving.aspx
and opt-out of the double click cookie..also, if you have firefox and
adblock plus,..click on the adblock "stop sign", go to preferences,
and uncheck all doubleclick options...SOLVED!

All you did at Google was was put in a opt-out of other double-click
cookies. It is the hosts file that is going to give you the most protection,
but there is a limit to how many variations you would need and that is
where the scome in with a more generic type of blocking (similar
to wildcards. The hosts file protects you cross-applications, and
cross browsers, and in Firefox safe mode. Remove the cookies for
doubleclick.com through tools > options > privacy > show cookies (button)...

I may be misunderstanding the settings on the adblock preferences list, but the
way I read it, the long list (each item with a checkbox to its right) is
prefaced by a line reading ad-blocking rules, hiding rules, etc. The column
header for the check boxes is titled "enabled". Therefore, I would expect (and
the default setting when you subscribe to a filter list) is that all the check
boxes are checked in order to enable every ad-blocking and hiding rule.
Unchecking a box would prevent ad-block from doing "its thing" for that
particular item.

In short, do you have it backwards?

Does it not seem ridiculous to get a cookie to opt out of cookies? I
simply set Firefox to block cookies by default and made exceptions for
those that I want. I also use a connection-killer blocklist that takes
wildcards and block many hosts, including Doubleclick, that way.

The Easylist subscription for Adblock Plus has a block list and an allow
list. There is a section in there, printed in green print, which allows
certain URLs to be contacted. If there are any in there that you do not
trust, you have to uncheck those so that they will not be allowed.
