The ....Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\pending directory keeps on filling up
with (obviously) crash reports although FF 5.0 never crashes at my computer.
I installed FF a week ago and in the meantime the directory contains >
200.000 files worth over 3GB of disk space. Does anyone know what this means
and how I can stop this "stealing" of my precious diskspace. Anytime a set
of reports consists of a *.EXTRA file and a *.DMP file. They are not easy to
delete because in any way these files are kind of locked (by FF ?). Also
faced this problem in FF4 but never in previous versions. What the f**k is
this ?

Thanks for any reaction

Leon

Well, I just looked there, and my most recent crash report is Dec. 8,
2010. I am using FF5, used FF4, and even FF6a2. No crashes.
So, what are you doing wrong?
My entire folder size in only a bit over 2MB.
Just offhand, I would say something is writing data there that isn't
from Firefox.
If you can't delete it, make sure Firefox is not running, and try again.
If you still can't delete them, then you can try to find out who
owns them. It might be some kind of malware.
Look at the 'last accessed' dates on them to see if they get accessed on
a regular basis.

BTW, I just deleted all my reports. No trouble at all.

because it is logging problems and saving important data/information.

> 200.000 files worth over 3GB of disk space.

then you have a lot of problems.

it means you need to figure out what problems are.

it is not stealing anything. you have just let it go too long with out
correcting.

therefore, every time you run firefox, it will do what it is supposed
to do and space will be used, because problems are repeating until you
correct problems.

something developers decided to include to bug you, because you do not
understand purpose.

as a suggestion, presuming that directory contains information related to
what is shown in "Error Console".

to start, i suggest you open "Error Console";

<ctrl+shift+j>, or <alt+t>,<c>, or click 'Menu' "Tools > Error Console".

when "Error Console" window opens, press <alt+c>, or click "Clear".

close "Error Console" window. close firefox.

as administrator, cd to "....Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\pending" directory.

copy any files, maybe a few, with extension unlike majority, to a back up
directory.

delete *all* _files_. keep directory open in disk/system browser.

open firefox, open "Error Console", any: "Errors", "Warnings", "Messages"?

any files created in '...\pending\' directory?

close "Error Console", firefox.

any files created in '...\pending\' directory?

if nothing found, check "Error Console" later.

when any: "Errors", "Warnings", "Messages" are found, google search what
is shown. if no solution, post to this list/news group.

some problems will be site related and checking 'cvs' number will usually
get you an answer.

long story short, if you want help, make use of what developers have
provided you. do not grip about it.

offer proper information about problems. how much disk space is being
used does not help to find cure.

above all, be glad that they are 'pending' crash reports.

also, you should thank developers for adding what they have because
it is what keeps firefox running when you have loaded firefox with
'bells and whistles with pretty flowers' with a bunch of add-ons,
be they 'extensions' or 'themes'.

hth.

you are welcome.

and, i thank you for you rant about what you think is a problem. i had
a good laughed reading it. most obvious you are unaware of what you
are seeing.

not to mention problems with flash.

in addition, check these mozilla web pages;

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Breakpad.reportURL

http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Firefox%20crashes
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Mozilla%20Crash%20Reporter

https://wiki.mozilla.org/Firefox/Crash_Protection

https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?format=multiple&id=394490
++/

on the 'kb.' pages, you will note that near end of pages, there are addition
links.

you should also have a look at them. there is further info to help you
understand *why* of ""....Mozilla\Firefox\Crash Reports\pending" directory."

also, among the additional links, you will/should/may find information on
disabling crash protection and reporting.

i do have such bookmarked, but i do not include such as i believe you should
leave it enabled.

i would not suggest disabling, but that is up to you and how much problems
you want to contend with. other than just a lot of files and "precious
disk space".

It would be better to delete the contents of the pending folder, and see
if it starts filling up again or if that was an issue from a previous
version.
