I've been using an extension called "One-Click Youtube Videos Download"
which is currently at version 1.1.19 for downloading Youtube videos, and
usually works great.

Unfortunately it messes up many websites (videos embedded into forums
"float" on top of the page over the other content).

I haven't been able to find the download site of this extension so I
can't contact the developer (has it been discontinued?), so I'm
wondering if anyone can recommend a similar working replacement?
PS: I've tried numerous Youtube download extensions but they either link
up to some conversion type website (which often doesn't work or takes
forever to do its thing), or takes an eternity to.... do nothing.

The above extension adds an icon in the menu-bar which, when clicked on
a video content website allows you to choose the format and save it
right away.

I forgot to say: I'm on Firefox 63.0.1 (64-bit) on a Mac running OSX
10.9.5 Mavericks.

I tried this based on the recommendation of a poster in one of the
Mozilla groups. It's not browser-reliant or youtube-only, you copy the
url and paste it into the program, and click. I was so impressed I
PayPalled ten bucks to a guy in Germany, which I usually only do when I
have a cold and can't think straight (other exceptions: mp3tag &
paint.net).

I've never understood the apparent compulsion to have applications run
in browsers. Seems more of an aesthetic rather than practical decision,
but to each his own.

Do I misunderstand you? I downloaded it and checked:

$ ldd ClipGrab-3.7.2-x86_64.AppImage
not a dynamic executable

$ file ClipGrab-3.7.2-x86_64.AppImage
ClipGrab-3.7.2-x86_64.AppImage: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, x86-64,
version 1, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.18,
stripped

$ ./ClipGrab-3.7.2-x86_64.AppImage

Can't really speak to the problems you're having. Sorry.

I downloaded the executable, clipgrab-3.7.2-cgorg.exe, obviously for
Windows, without any difficulty.

Unfortunately in this update they've changed something, and not for the
better. In the installation procedure there is a page with a checked box
for installing Macafee something-or-other (not the A/V). I unchecked the
pre-approved box and the installation proceeded without it. After
checking the registry and likely hiding places in Windows, my conclusion
(please arrive at your own) is that nothing extraneous was installed.

Thanks. I tried it but found it overly complicated, and didn't like the
additional app which kept on connectionto somewhere all the time
(according to Little Snitch).
I ended up with "Easy Youtube video downloader express":

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/easy-youtube-video-download/?src=search

It's not quite as good as the "One-click Youtube video download" but
seems to do the job.
It appears Youtube have changed their setup (again) which makes some of
these extensions obsolete and the new ones more reliant on external,
online processing, so it may not all be the above extension's fault.
