For the past two weeks I've been getting Firefox crashes on the home page of
the Guardian newspaper (http://www.guardian.co.uk/). The crashes are 100%
reproducible and occur after about 10 seconds. When I first saw the problem
I was using Firefox 2.0.0.3 and I now see the same crashes using 2.0.0.4.
All testing was on Windows Vista.

I contacted the Guardian 5 days ago and they asked for some details but I
never heard back from them again and I don't know if they looked into the
problem in any detail or figured out what is wrong. The crashes, however,
continue.

You might try upgrading to XP.

Is it a 32-bit version of Vista or a 64-bit version? It (the Guardian site)
displays in Windows XP sp2 IE7 fine. When FF crashes, what error if any is
written to the Event Viewer Application log? For now, I suggest you visit
this site using IE (version 7, preferably). It may be a programming error on
this site only which they need to fix.

Hi Mickey,

FWIW the Gruniard site is rock-solid here under Windows 2000 and FF 2.0.0.4

I hadn't tried Event Viewer, but when I went to the Guardian site today the
problem is gone. It is not clear whether they made some purposeful change
after 5 days or just by chance rotated off some ad that caused the problem.

I was wrong. Although my testing earlier today did not show the Guardian
crash, when I actually tried to skim through the headlines for real I got
the usual type of crash. Event Viewer flagged an error and gave the
following information:

Faulting application firefox.exe, version 1.8.20070.51502, time stamp
0x4649940b, faulting module firefox.exe, version 1.8.20070.51502, time stamp
0x4649940b, exception code 0xc0000005, fault offset 0x00427265, process id
0x39c, application start time 0x01c7a791b587b240.

If there is more information I should be posting please let me know; I'm not
very familiar with Event Viewer.

I'll also do more testing to see if the problem occurs on other computers.

No problem here at all, using Firefox 2.0.0.4.

Have you tried starting Firefox in "Safe Mode" -- to see whether
the problem still occurs when Firefox is running in "Safe Mode"?

I tried a second Vista computer and was unable to reproduce the problem at
the Guardian site using Firefox 2.0.0.4.

I tried the original computer with Firefox in Safe Mode and got the same
crash. The original computer runs Vista Business, and the one unusual thing
about the computer is that it is a Tablet PC with various features such as
Pen Flicks turned on.

Does anyone have further suggestion as to things to check or do? I'll also
see if others using Tablet PCs can reproduce the problem.

I've found someone else reporting this problem on a Tablet PC running Vista
but not on a non-Tablet PC running Vista:
http://www.gottabemobile.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=3148

We still don't know what the problem is, but this may explain why some see
the problem and others don't.

I've tested more computers and here are the results for the Guardian Web
site crashes (counting Yonatan's data at
http://www.gottabemobile.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=3148):

Vista on Tablets: crash in 2 of 2 cases
XP on Tablet: crash in 1 of 1 case
Vista non-Tablet: OK in 3 of 3 cases

It seems this is a problem that requires Tablet PC + Firefox + Guardian to
occur. On both Vista and XP, the crashes occur even in Safe Mode.

I'll let the Guardian folks know so they can reproduce the problem if they
can find a Tablet PC, and I'll file a Firefox bug.

Any other ideas on how to get this figured out?
