Any ideas?
It's a joke!

Kind of like when you warn someone about the "Shred" button on a complex copier
control panel. Some will freeze looking for the button for several minutes.
Then they either get the joke or ask someone :-)

There is no warranty, but it's the general idea of the message that is
no joke. Too many users fiddle with about:config and end up having
problems with Firefox because of it. It's similar to editing the Windows
registry: When you access about:config, if you don't know exactly which
preference you wish to change, and what value you want to change it to,
you shouldn't be accessing it. :-)

It is a joke. While the source code is covered by a license, there is no
EULA per say, rather a copy of the code license. There is no warenty
that I have ever seen. Another one can be seen by typeing into the nav
bar about:mozilla

If it's "no joke" then they should have been a bit more intellectually
intuitive in the warning message.

Really? Mine said, "Here there be dragons" and warned me to be careful.
I found the message amusing, but then I am weird. Perhaps a better
message would be:
Warning! Incorrectly changing settings here
can render your Firefox unworkable, or
cause confusing results.

Interesting, I didn't tick anything and I've never seen that message.
Warning!
Poking around in this file may cause the program to stop working,
or to give incorrect results.
If you don't know what you are doing,
DON'T.

Ron Hunter rphu...@charter.net
If the user actually believes there's a warranty, they shouldn't be
fiddling with about:config; so I think the "intellectual intuitiveness"
is good.
Have you filed a bug? Have you started a discussion about it in the
developer newsgroup?
Somebody just for fun decided to put that in.
Unless They've decide to have 10 year-100,000 , mile warranty like some
car Makers.

its there right now...the tick box tricks you as well - it reads "Show
this message next Time"
jeez, reg, where did your sense of humor go? Easter eggs have been a
part of software since day 1 - whats wrong with a little serendipity
with a valid warning?
I like it - its clever. Bloat??

No, was just answering your "no joke" reply.
they do. The rest of the warning says:
"Changing these advanced settings can be harmful to the
stability, security, and performance of this application.
You should only continue if you are sure of what you are
doing."
Then it has a "I'll be careful, I promise!" button.
To me, that isn't a very good warning! Its far too
confusing to a newbie.

Well, I installed the new Flock 2 Beta sourced from FF3 and yes, the
message popped up with about:config. So now I am no longer ticked-off. :-)

Also have been using the minefield nightlies since day-1 so that's
probably the reason. Whatever ... It's never popped up here in any of
the RC's or the release.

I saw it after installing the Flock-2 beta which is sourced from FF3.
Well, in my Vista set up I got a "Here be Dragons" heading (or similar
words). It was obvious it was tongue-in-cheek :p
If you want it back....
about:config
General.warnOnAboutConfig -- toggle back to 'True'
Typing that in Seamonkey resolves to this:
And so at last the beast fell and the unbelievers rejoiced.
But all was not lost, for from the ash rose a great bird.
The bird gazed down upon the unbelievers and cast fire
and thunder upon them. For the beast had been
reborn with its strength renewed, and the
followers of Mammon cowered in horror.
from The Book of Mozilla, 7:15
The first part is on two lines and the last line is by itself right
Justifed in Bold print and has a bright red But no dino. nor no
SeaMonkey, or even a shrimp.
I get something similar (11:9 rather than 7:15) in FF3, both XP Pro and
Vista Ultimate.
