I'm trying to type some financial data into a online forum posting....
and that forum WILL display the text using it's own mono-spacing
so that everything displays properly aligned.

However - How do I type in a "mono-space" font ??
If I just type as normal - things come up mis-aligned,
and I have to go back and forth editing the text
so it will display properly aligned.

Is there a way to set in FF a "mono-spaced" typing font ??

"courier" is the most common fixed-width font

Re-read your question.

In a *online forum* I visit, (City-Data) the font used in messages *on
the forum* is controlled by the forum, not by TB. In a Compose
Message, or Reply, panel, at the top, is a pop-up box where you select
a font. Again, Courier is the most common fixed-width font.

Your online forum may be different.

Of course I know that.  I was simply pointing to where the settings is to change the fonts.  On my system I rarely use mono-fonts.  i prefer to use HTML where ever possible and in particular use different type faces.

Yes, I would have expected that to be the case )-:.

I think "Courier New", at least for Windows users.

Only by over-riding Web sites' specified fonts.

Tools - Options - Content - Fonts & Colors - Advanced. Uncheck "Allow
pages to choose ..." Set a monospaced font for Serif and Sans-serif.

Unfortunately, ALL text on Web sites will be in a monospaced font.

Have you tried creating your post/data in Notepad first and then copy/paste to where ever you want to publish it?  Websites HTML and so they can use your copied text exactly as it is including the fonts and colours used.

The forum's editor should offer a way to select a font. If not, there
is no way.

just to followup - there was a simple way -

I just used NotePad - set the font to Courier -
and typed in my table of financial numbers....
all aligned in columns via spaces.

Then just Copy & Paste into the forum's input text window,
WITH the forums "
" turned on for that section
that will render that embedded text as mono-space.
I guess if it didn't have that
feature, it would be a nightmare.

And that was it - worked - at least for that forum -

Exactly what I was going to recommend but you figured it out before I
got here. ;)

That will work on EVERY website. The key is to have the proper number of
spaces. When you use a proportional font, the varying widths result in
misalignment vertically, which can't be fixed by adding spaces. In
Courier (and other monospaced fonts) EVERYTHING is the same width
horizontally and everything lines up vertically. If you actually count
the characters on the line while using Times, you can create a file that
will display properly in Courier. But it makes more sense to just use
Courier to create the file and then paste that data onto the website.

Little known fact, digits are mono-spaced in all fonts.

On one forum, I can do <tt> ... </tt> (tt = TeleType Font, which most
of us probably know as "courier new") but it collapses multiple spaces
to a single space, but <pre> ... </pre> will both be "teletype" and
preserve spaces, but it kills autowrap (one must hit Enter at the end of
each line of text).

On phpBB systems it is
...
.

On one forum I can use
...
and use | to separate
columns and Enter to separate rows. While it still uses the default
(usually proportional) font, it does force items into columns, alas each
item left-justified in its column, but at least they are distinct
columns.

Sometimes one has to do a fair amount of digging on a board to find out
how to handle tabular data on that board. :(
