When I launch JPEGs in FF 2.0.0.4, they default to full size. With
large images, I gotta resize them to make them fit the screen. So two
Q's:

1) I want images to initially display in screen-fit size, AND still
let me resize them to full when desired.

I've tried toggling about:config's browser.enable_enable_resizing, but
maybe I'm doing it wrong. Besides, I don't want to disable RESIZING;
just toggle images' INITIAL size.

2) Why doesn't FF's Tools Options have any such settings? I for one
can't find any. Pretty egregious feature to omit from the UI, if you
ask me.

BTW, FF UI's implementation of resizing is absolutely great--you can
click anywhere on the image to resize.

By contrast, IE 6's implementation is TERRIBLE. First you must
navigate to the LR corner where its stupid resize token is located.
Worse, the token is wrongly buffered behind something (Microsoft's
stock ticker?) and doesn't appear until maybe 2 secs after the image
does (at least on my Eisenhower-era 400 MHz-class machine).

Thanks much.

I don't know if the quoted preference is a typo, or not, but I have no
such pref listed.

The one you want is 'browser.enable_automatic_image_resizing' set to
'true'. This controls the images initial size. If it is set to false,
simply double-click on it to toggle it to 'true'.

That is how it is set on mine, and images that are too large to fit the
page will automatically be reduced to fit, clicking on the image will
expand it to full size, and clicking again will reduce to fit again.

If I toggle it to 'false', then the images initially load at full size,
then reduce to fit when I click on them, just the opposite behavior of
the above.

If that preference is already set to true, then you may have a conflict
with an extension. To see if this is the case, see this page:

http://support.mozilla.com/kb/Basic+Troubleshooting#Extension_issues

Note that when they say to start in Safe Mode, they are referring to FF
Safe Mode, not Windows Safe Mode. Follow the link provided in the
instructions for the steps to start FF Safe Mode.

Let us know your results.

The user interface in Tools, Options was removed (you got stuck with it off) use
about:config on the location bar to change to True (which is the default)
browser. enable_automatic_image_resizing
Read more about about:config and that specific entry in

Additional related materials:
For a lot more control over images would also suggest installing
the "Launchy" extension, to bring up your own choice for
an image browser, and if you don't have an image browser
to install "IrfanView" application. My notes on each

Alex & David:

Thanks much for your replies.

I'll try toggling that about:config setting again. And yes, I
misspelled it in my late-nite, drug-induced posting.

Thanks again.
