thanks to all who responded.... I found this in about:config and
toggled it browser.newtabpage.enabled
seems to be working for now.

Thought you did not want to click the grid.

great. good to know.

that pref is in 17.0.8., but i did not believe it would be cause.

i saw it when i opened about:config and ran "Search:" for 'tab' and
'history'.

strange that it changed because i have "default" as "true".

another thing you might do, from menu bar select;

Help > Troubleshooting Information

then press <ctrl+s> or select [Copy all to clipboard] and save the
page for future reference. then if/when you have problems, you have
something to check your setting against. where in, by the way, you
will see;

Important Modified Preferences

and are settings you, or an add-on have made changes to. defaults
do not show in this listing. no need to because they are _defaults_.

any preference name settings in about:config added by an add-on are
preceded by name of add-on.

btw. no biggie. when a problem is solved, normal way to show such
would be;

Subject: [SOLVED] Re: history shows in new tab??
or
Subject: Re: history shows in new tab?? [SOLVED]

in thread that you are relating to.

this way, solution stays with thread and relates better at a site
that publishes forums, such as this support group.

Amie toggled it to false, something I suggested earlier in the thread
about it.

This doesn't actually solve the problem as Amie described it. It only
prevents the thumbnails from being displayed on the default new tab
page.

I did not want to click grid all the time and this now shows a blank
white page like I wanted.

I was being suggested to change browser.newtab. url which would not
stick after numerous times trying to change it. I now see a white
blank page that I was striving to get back instead of my history
showing up.

welcome.

backing up of files before before making changes is what i call "cyoa",
"cover your own ass". :=)

when i make backups of files, such as 'prefs.js', i _copy_ file to a new
file with a current time 'time stamp'. i append the "-yyyy-mmdd-hhmm" to
end of file name;

prefs.js-2013-0831-0057

this way, i get a chronological order of backups. if month name, ie, august,
where used, backups would be of the months in a mixed up order and one would
have to look thru entire list of backups to find what is needed for a restore.

by having file browser in _detail_view_ is also easier to see what is in a
directory in a tight view area. whereas with _folder_view_, one has to page
several times to see what all is in a directory. i apply this to directories
as well.

if you wish to discus this further, insert [OFF LIST] at beginning of
"Subject:" and reply directly to my email address. a filter will direct it
to my 'chat-techs' email folder and we can continue from there. no need to
'build points' in 2 threads. ;=)

such applies to _all_ emails i receive.

actually, she stated that she removed it. see her last post to old thread
where she states that she removed it from 'prefs.js'.

you are calling it 'thumbnails'. amie calls it 'history'. ???

ok. the 'mud' is settling.

i believe what you two have misnamed, mozilla calls "top-sites".

No, she didn't. You've snipped the context, which makes it unclear what
"it" refers to. The "it" I was referring to was not the same "it" that
you're now referring to; they're two different prefs.

The thumbnails on the about:newtab page are of frequently/recently
accessed pages, which are in history.

*NOTE* above should have read;

i believe you two have misnamed what mozilla calls "top-sites".

in re-reading what i was composing and re-editing, i did not complete what
i intended to edit before sending. :=(

> yes you are right. but top sites brings up history of sites I went to.

you are missing _key_wording_, *top sites*. 'top sites' is _not_ history of
sites. it is, to my understanding, sites that you have logged with a _high_
number of times, and/or, what you have _pinned_ to a 'top sites' page.
apples/oranges. ;=)

{i have a problem reading page because it is one more of the numerous amount
of pages that 'bleed' in my firefox version. [something that i will not
go into again because members of this list do not understand usage/meaning
of word *bleed*. they think for something to 'bleed', there must be blood.
i can read page with out 'bleed' when i use "konqueror" in web page node.]}

if you will re-log above link and read _all_ of what page says.

you will see in "Table of Contests", "How do I turn the new tab page off?"
click on it, or page down to lower section of page for _proper_procedure_
for 'turning off' or 'toggle' new tab page. there is no mention of editing
'prefs.js'. apples/oranges/tangerines. ;=)

apologies for delay of reply. went to a family reunion of one my cousins
family. had to crash for awhile. too much good Greek food and wine. OPA.

later.

this problem came back after restarting computer. when I open a new
tab and look at the sites listed it compares with my history file.
exception is amazon is always listed in new tab which I have not been
to in months?

Use the same instructions as above, but do it in Firefox.

You have an extension installed called AccelerateTab, which may be doing
what you wnat to get rid of. Try disabling it.
1. In Firefox, go to Tools-->Add-ons.
2. On the left side, select the "Extensions" tab.
3. Beside to the right of "AccelerateTab", there should be a button
called [Disable]. Click on it. You may need to restart Firefox.

you need to _read_ all of page i 'hot linked' earlier in thread telling

it tells you how to toggle on/off and disable.

of course it "compares with" your history. _but_ it is only a comparison.

and is why i do not log amazon.com. they pull too many tricks with ones
browser. only safe way i know to log them is thru an anonymity site.

amazon.com is not only site of their type. and depending on what you are
looking for, better deals. just by opening their home page, you can see
that they are tracking people.

just for 'fun of it', i just logged them. near bottom of page, there is;

how would they know that when it is what i am writing about only in

They require the cache (disk) to display the website. The sites are
selected from history.
Both must be retained for the new tab page to appear as intended.

The post you quoted is still not the correct context for my
statements. Amie has both deleted prefs.js and toggled the pref I was
talking about; I don't know which happened first and which happened
later.

Amie has started another new thread to say (again) that the problem is
solved. I hope it is this time. Either way, I'm done with these
threads.

good morning Amie,

i read back thru your threads and this email is to clarify just where
things are now.

plus, make it easier to know when you are replying.

"plus" first.

for some reason or other, your replies to post are coming to me with a
quote mark, ie, ">" before your reply line.

if you are adding the ">", please do not. it makes difficult to see where you
are replying. especially if/when you make a reply 'in line' of post you are
replying to.

thank you. now to your post in reply to Ron Hunter. [with quote marks reduced.]
you are replying as if what chris ilias suggested on 09/01/2013 03:53 pm
'did not work' / 'does not work' / 'may not have worked' / 'you are waiting
to see if it worked'.

in your reply to chris at 09/01/2013 04:42 pm, you say;

}> so far so good. don't know how you knew it was a plug in but thank you

so, problem has gone away and not returned after closing and reopening firefox?

good afternoon g. I have not added anything to my post and using
plain text. must be something in Thunderbird causing the characters
you are seeing.

what chris ilias suggested worked up until I rebooted this morning. I want a blank page when opening a new tab. I do not want to click off anything every time I open a new tab. it should be blank when I open it. that is the goal I am seeking. there must be a work around or something I can delete in the registry or the prefs.js file or the chrome thing. are there no programmers aboard that can tell me how to get this back to where I want it?

Put a bookmark on the Bookmarks Toolbar and make its Location be
"about:blank" (no quotes). Middle-click on it to open a new blank tab.

ok. instructions on page made no mention of reboot, and i was wondering.

back the now infamous link;

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/new-tab-page-show-hide-and-customize-top-sites

watch for line wrap on link

either click on;

How do I turn the new tab page off?

or scroll down to it, follow instructions on how to disable/remove.

follow removal, reboot to see how it worked. post back.

Sorry I haven't read this complete thread, so don't know what addons you
have installed. Sounds like what you are experiencing is what you would
see if you entered the URL about:newtab. Correct?

In about:config, look for browser.newtab.URL. Does it have the value
"about:newtab?" If it does, change it to "about:blank" and restart FF. Now
what do you get when you open a new tab?

sorry you did not read all of the post. I have tried these
instructions until I am blue in the face. the setting will not stick
no matter how many times I try it. when I try to modify
browser.newtab.url to about:blank it reverts itself right back to
browser.newtab.url.

Amie states that "browser.newtab.URL" does not exist in about:config,
after disabling the offending extension that may have been causing the
problem. Prior to disabling that extension it did exist but could not be
changed.

I suggest Amie try a "Reset Firefox".

photobucket is good. i have used them a few times.

advantage of a 'sign up' sight is that you have your own path and you can

follow these instructions from;

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/new-tab-page-show-hide-and-customize-top-sites

If you are concerned about your privacy, you can turn this feature off
completely:

1. In the Location bar, type about:config and press Enter.

The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may
appear. Click I'll be careful, I promise! to continue to the
about:config page.
2. Type browser.newtab.url in the search box.

3. Double-click the browser.newtab.url preference and change the url from
about:newtab to about:blank. Alternately, you can change it to
about:home for the Firefox Google home page, or type in your preferred
home page, for example google.com.

4. Click OK and close the about:config tab.

it does not mention 'restart', but i will.

_restart_computer_ to insure a _full_reset_.
