My wife is using an English copy of Windows XP Pro but she is
attempting e-mail in Chinese. Sometimes the system is willing to
switch languages and sometimes it's not. Also, frequently it stops
converting.
There does seem to be some relationship to what Firefox is doing--it's
as if in certain situations it's refusing the switch but I haven't
isolated what's going on.
Can anyone shed some light on this and ideally how to avoid the
problem??
(Note: She's a total novice with computers and I don't read a word of
Chinese.)

Firefox is a browser.
Are you talking about a webmail (web-page-based email reader/composer)?
Which one? If so, does the Chinese work with another browser?

Yeah, she's using it to access Gmail.
It feels like there is some situations in which Firefox is disallowing
language changes.
The problem is not whether the Chinese works, the problem is with
being allowed to change languages. Both English and Chinese are
installed, at times she needs to shift between them.

I use the language bar to switch. This works for me.
The MSPY Chinese IME turns conversion off or on whenever the SHIFT key
is pressed. I suspect that this may be what is happening. The
floating language bar displays 中 when conversion is turned on, and 英
when conversion is turned off.

If your wife is using the keyboard to switch languages, it might
be that the focus needs to be in an editable area of the window.
I turn keyboard switching off and use the language bar to switch
languages.

I'm a big fan of the keyboard but maybe I should turn it off for her.

Where did you find that help file? I've been navigating basically
blind with it because I couldn't find any documentation.

Testing......
Yup--it's not specific to Firefox, either. I just reproduced the
problem on the desktop vs a code window of Visual Studio. Strange
behavior.
Thanks. I know how to make it behave for her now.

Set the language to Chinese, and then click on the question mark icon
in the floating language bar. This will bring down a menu with two
entries...
锟斤拷 Microsoft Pinyin IME Help
锟斤拷 Language Bar Help
Pick the menu option "Microsoft Pinyin IME Help".

If the language is not set to Chinese, you will not see the menu
option "Microsoft Pinyin IME Help".

Thanks for the help. She's much happier with it now.
