Does the Mozilla Crash Reporter come up? If so, open Firefox, go to the
address "about:crashes" (without the quotes) and tell us your latest
crash IDs. We can then look at the data specific to your crash and have
a better idea of what is causing the problem.

There's your problem. No updates for several dog's ages, websites have
been rewritten, and your system no longer plays nice with them (or vice
versa). The fact the IE won't play nice either is a bad sign: it
indicates that your system is so far behind that it will slowly but
surely become less and less capable of linking you to the web.
There's no point upgrading to XP or Vista, go straight to Windows 7. But
I suspect that your hardware is also old, and it may have problems
running Windows 7 well. You should have a CPU running at 1.5GHZ or
better, 2GB RAM, and a 80-100 GB hard disk. If your hardware is about
there, Win7 Basic will run on it, and you'll have a good experience. But
considering that netbooks start around $200, and decent laptops can be
had for $300 and up, I would advise you to get a new machine ASAP.
However:
If you're unwilling to invest in new hardware at this time, you could
try Ubuntu (Linux). Free, as in zero dollars. It runs nicely on older
hardware, includes Mozilla and other useful apps. Download and burn the
CD, reset your BIOS so that it boots from CD first, and you can try Ubu
(running from the CD) without changing your present setup. Look at:

Good luck,
