"Lock" may be the wrong word; I can't remember for sure.

Before 57, there was a setting if you right-clicked a tab that
prevented the tab from being closed. It's gone now. Does anyone know a
way to get it back, either by a setting or an extension?

Are you thinking of "pin tab"? If so, it is in the context menu when one
right+clicks on a tab.

I don't know. (See below)

I thought that might have been what I was looking for, so I tried it
right after 57 came out. But to my surprise, what it did was close the
tab.

Given your message, I just tried it again. Same result: it closed the
tab.

Anyone know what might be wrong and how to fix it?

Is the pinned tab now showing in the New Tab page?

Are you asking about the tab that shows when you press the + sign to
the right of the tabs? No, it's not.

Is that what "Pin tab" is supposed to do? If so, that's very different
from what I wanted (see above).

It does not completely disappear, but become a small icon on the far
left of the tabs bar.

I never used Pin Tab, but it doesn't close the tab for me in my test. It
does place the favicon to the left of the first tab.

Thanks very much. Now that you point it out, I see it there. That's
not exactly what I wanted, but it might be better than nothing. I'll
try using it for a while before I decide how I like it.

It didn't take me long to decide that I didn't like it. All it does is
substitute a smaller tab for the bigger one. The small one is not
protected against accidental closure, which is what I used to have and
what I wanted.

So I'll ask my original question again: Before 57, there was a

To address your original question, I don't recall Firefox ever having a
lock tab feature. Are you sure it wasn't part of an add-on?

No, I'm not sure. But if it was, I don't remember which one. Several
have of course been disabled by 57.

As a workaround, if you accidentally close a tab, just right-click on
any current tab and select "Undo Close tab".

You have already removed the extensions disabled by Firefox? They should
still be there in your Add-ons Manager, in the Legacy Extensions section
right under Plugins.

To quote Mozilla: "Pinned Tabs are small – only showing the site's icon,
not its title – and they live on the left side of the Tab Strip. Pinned
Tabs don't have a close button so you can't accidentally close them. You
can still close them by right-clicking on them and selecting Close Tab from
the menu."

As they say, you cannot _accidentally_ close them. If you intentionally
close them then there isn't anything to be done for it.

Ken Blake

You *can* accidentally close them, and I've done it several times,
which I why I don't like the feature.

I almost never use the close button. I use the Gesturefy extension,
which I like very much. It lets me do many common things with a mouse
gesture, and one of those common things is closing a tab. It works
exactly the same way with a pinned tab as with a regular tab.

Thanks very much. That's a very good workaround. Now all I have to do
is remember it. :-)

Yes, I know. But their names don't tell me which, if any, of them had
this feature.

My bloviated meandering follows what Ken Blake graced us with on
11/19/2017 9:35 AM:
While I haven't installed Fx57, I can confirm that prior version of Fx
(I'm now on 52.5) had two options in the tab context menu (Protect Tab
and Lock Tab). However, those were provided bt TabMixPlus which is not
compatible with Fx 57.

Thanks very much. I suspected that it might have been an add-on. I
used to run TabMixPlus.

So, can you, or anyone else here tell me whether, and if so when,
TabMixPlus will come out with a FireFox 57-compatible version? Or
whether someone else has come out or will come out with an extension
that does the same thing?

Thanks. I guess I have to be patient and hopeful.

Most of those are not compatible with 57 either, and I didn't see
anything that had the feature I wanted.
