Hello list,

I hope this is the right list for this sort of question. In the print
dialog under linux versions of firefox, the 4 margins can be specified
(in inches), along with color or B/W, and the paper size.

In the page layout options there is another, seemingly unrelated set
of margins, set by default at 12.7mm ( 0.5 inches).

All of my settings I am successfully (I believe) carrying out in the
former, print dialog (since firefox ignores the CUPS settings for
margins and happily tries to print to within 0.04 inches of the paper
edges by default).

On the MozDev site there are several printing margin prefs listed, but
I cannot grok their explanation, and unfortunately there is no
detailed page layout diagram that I have found that will help me to
understand what the two sets of margins mean.

Can anyone give some tips on where to get more information on this.
I'm afraid I will not understand the concepts if I try to read the
source code.

Many thanks,
Gernot Hassenpflug

The print margins are a printer specific settings. They indicate the maximum
print area your printer allows. They should be set once and changed only
when you change printers. The Layout Margins can vary according to the
printing job you are doing. They cannot be smaller than the print margins.
You could have just one set of margins but then you would have to remember
what the print margins for your printer are and not make your margins
smaller than that. If all is setup properly the page setup dialog will not
let you set up Layout Margins smaller than the print margins. That is the
theory anyway.

Thanks for the explanation,

OK, so these are indeed independent of the paper and printer, although
physically the printer has the limitations of print area that one
tries to set to in the "print margins".

It is a bit confusing because the headers and footers do not appear to
obey the page layout margins, and I could not find an unambiguous
explanation of the complete layout. Thus, the absolute position of the
header/footer is unknown to me, and if the page layout margins are
made too small at top and bottom, then the page body will start to
infringe on the header/footer space. Probably having a bit more
structure in the page layout would be useful for users, similar to
what is available for LaTeX and other typesetting
programs...header/footer space and page body space, even/odd side
margins. The page layout engine uses these internally and perhaps
making them available to the users would be a good idea.

You might want to see this thread. I believe I posted some information
regarding adjusting the header/footer positions.
http://groups.google.com/group/mozilla.support.firefox/browse_frm/thread/d7a594b95457d5fc/649fd8ad84b5889a

I can't access it right now, to check its relevance, as Google is
currently telling me:

"The archive for this group is currently unavailable.

We're sorry for the inconvenience. Please try again shortly."

Hope this helps.

Got it! Thanks, plus I now have the list archive address, I was
looking for it on Gmane and on motzarella. Now I find I need to access
the mozilla news server.

You're welcome.

The server is news.mozilla.org, standard news port number, 119. No
