I noticed for about a week now when I type cnn, amazon, foodnetwork, or
any name, I no longer go to those sites. I see something like the
following in the location bar:

http://cnn/

It is a page with several links to:

There is one link to a privacy policy that goes to cdn.dsultra.com

Is anyone else getting something similar?

The strange thing is when I type cnn or any name in the location in
Internet Explorer 8, I get the same type of result: http://cnn/ or
http://amazon/ as I do with Firefox. Could the internet provider
frontier.com have any thing to do with this?

I recently had malware that caused any subject I entered in the Google
search box to bring up the same page with various advertisements.
Have you searched your computer for malware?

I'm wondering if that was something that was being done by your DNS
provider. If I enter CNN and hit enter, I get my ISP's search page.
What you can do is type cnn and the press CTRL-ENTER. That puts www
before and .com after the term you typed.

It's called Domain Guessing. When you type "cnn" in the url address
window for instance, Firefox will try to guess the actual url.

In the URL address windows, type about:config and then in the filter
window, type "fixup" (no quotes)

Look for:
browser.fixup.alternate.enabled

Dbl click the line to change it to "true" if it says "false".

Also look at the other lines, one should say .www and the other should
say .com

Try entering http://cnn/ and see if it goes to www.cnn.com .. it does here.

My preferences are as you state for all of them, yet it does a search
through my service provider. Not sure if the OP will have the same
results.

Only thing I can think of for your issue is "keyword search".

In about config, enter "keyword" and then:

keyword.enabled

If it's "true" make it "false".

Even tho mine is set to "true", it doesn't do what yours does, dunno.

No difference either way. True is the default value in the meantime.
I have very few add-ons (sqlite manager, pdfit, java console) so I
don't see that being the problem. In the meantime it's not a
"problem" for me but rather for the OP. I was simply testing it on my
machine to see what I would have to tweak to get the behaviour he had
and is hoping to regain.

Would seem to be acting like the following are not at their defaults, and
the listing does not list them so they should be at defaults unless the settings
distributed with the browser got messed up, if they were missing would expect
every setting to appear as user set regardless of whether it should appear as
default or not.
browser.fixup.alternate.suffix default string .com
browser.fixup.alternate.prefix default string www
browser.fixup.alternate.enabled default boolean true

You can of course enter the likes of cnn or ibm and use
Ctrl+Enter to get what you want, which is exactly what I
do and thus a search can never be done from the location bar
unless I specifically order it with a keyword shortcut. Although
that is what I want it obviously is not what Jim (O.P.) wants.

Were the profiles copied from removable media such as CD-ROM

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Multiple_profile_files_created#Read-only_or_locked_files_in_the_profile

Check your user.js file, if you have one, in your profile,
if you do a find on "policy" do you find anything.

I know of any reason why that would make a difference. // David

Not sure if you were addressing me or the OP in the above. In my case
everything is as you've noted, all default values. I do not have a
user.js (very familiar with what it is, where it is, and what it
does). The profiles were not copies from anywhere. It was a fresh/
new install. And in my case it's running on W7. I wonder if the
reason for the behaviour is as I noted earlier, that it's being done
by the ISP (well I said DNS but really I should have said the ISP who
in turn points to the DNS). The way to determine that would be to use
a tool like wireshark and examine your traffic going across the wire
to see what is exiting your system to go up stream. That would tell
us if the www and .com are added before it leaves your machine, or
added after it's left it (hence by the ISP). The reason I suggest
that is because in my case when I do that it runs a search through my
ISP's search page yet I do not have them set up as a search engine
anywhere in my settings. So I'm guessing at this point that the
string (i.e. "cnn") is sent to my ISP and it decides if it's going to
make some assumptions or handle it otherwise. I nothing has changed
on the OP's machine but yet the behaviour has it suggests to me that
the change is external. With what I observed here I am inclined to
believe that this is happening at the ISP level.

Try going to:
about:config
Filter on "keyword" - no quotes
If "true" toggle to "false"

This will restore older style address bar behavior in Ffox 4 b10

I fat-fingered this one- go to
"keyword.enabled" and toggle it off.

Okay, I don't see anything there that would cause the problem you're
having. If it's happening in IE as well, call your ISP to ask if there
is anything they've configured on their side that would cause this.

If they haven't configured it that way, you may have malware installed.

Not from my ISP.

Can you try these three tests?

T.1 Enter the following in the location bar
http://cnn./
That is, with a period just after the "cnn".

Q. Does Firefox still go to the same page?

T.2 Take your PC, visit a friend who is on a different ISP to you,
and try connecting through their ISP.

Q. Does the same thing still happen when using a different ISP?

T.3 Check whether your computer's network settings have
any DNS suffixes for resolution of unqualified names.

Assuming you are running Windows XP

3.1 Open Control Panel >> Network Connections
3.2 Double-click your network connection
3.3 Click the "Properties" button
3.4 Under "The connection uses the following items",
select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" from the list.
3.5 Click "Properties"
3.6 Click "Advanced"
3.7 Select the "DNS" tab
3.8 Under "Append these DNS suffixes (in order)",
there is a list box for DNS suffixes.

Q. Is there anything in the list box?

When I try it at work (Ubuntu here vs W7 at home, but same version of
FF I get the following File Not Found error:

Firefox can't find the file at jar:file:///usr/lib/firefox-3.6.13/
chrome/en-US.jar!/locale/browser-region/region.propertiescnn.

It's a different service provider here as well so more than one
variable changed unfortunately. Having said that I have the machine I
used at home for the test so I'll re-test and post the results.

Interesting... I'm using the same computer I used yesterday at home.
At home it did a search through my ISP when I typed cnn only. Here it
pre-pends www and appends .com. So the only difference is the ISP.
What is equally interesting is as I posted above, when this was done
in Ubuntu the behaviour was different.

So to me this strongly suggests that the changes happened at the ISP
(assuming nothing changed on the OP's computer). If that is the case,
I don't know if there is a way to get it to work locally. CTRL-ENTER
is the easiest way to achieve this. Just requires holding down the
CTRL key when hitting ENTER vs just hitting ENTER.

My ISP did that once. I got around the problem by changing to different DNS
servers.

That was my first guess at the problem when I posted yesterday. But
obviously the OS is a factor seeing I see different results when using
Ubuntu vs when using W7 on the same network connection.

How do you go about changing DNS servers?

I'm on Win 7 so getting there was a little different, but the box you
refer to is blank for DNS.

Has anyone even bothered looking into about:config?
Ubuntu, like most Linux systems- if not all, can be customized including
limiting a user's rights and permissions. If a file isn't found, then search
for the config file on different policies. Does the user have permission? If
so, then you need to find and install the necessary files or create them.
having someone type out the full URL prevents accidental redirection to
unwanted sites.
Ask an Ubuntu specific question on the Ubuntu forums or on one of the Ubuntu
mailing lists, not on the firefox support lists where people don't know shit
from chocolate.

Thanks for test 3 results.

What about test 1 results? You should have no difficulty
doing that whether it is Win7 or any other OS.

??????

The earlier discussions in this thread about preferences was all
about:config stuff...

What file are you talking about that one would not be able to find?

And what's with the last comment about a Ubuntu specific question?
The OP did not ask a Ubuntu specific question. As a matter of fact he
indicated at one point later on in the thread that he has Windows 7.
That correction aside, what kind of statement is "not on the firefox
support lists where people don't know shit from chocolate." ??? You
clearly don't hang out on this list very much. There are very
knowledgeable people in many areas including Ubuntu on this Firefox
support list.

I made the changes to my router. It you can't you can change them on the
computer.

I used 4.2.2.6 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2. If you only have room to enter two,
that's OK. I got this information from the GRC website at
https://www.grc.com/dns/benchmark.htm . The software is for Windows, but
works in WINE too.

If I go there I get this line above the one you describe:
"keyword.URL;http://search.yahoo.com/search?fr=mcafee&p=

It's obvious to me that this is the reason that when I type in something
such as "CNN" with no prefix, I get taken to Yahoo.

I'm kind of afraid to remove that line. Is there a safe way to change it?

TIA

As soon as I got that silly "help", I searched the config,
and emptied that particular string, for me it was pointing to
google.
For 1 or more years it has given me no problems.
When I mis-type, I want a blanck page, not a snotty google.
