OK running the latest stable release of Firefox and notice that after a
while downloading the download button arrow has a very small orange
circle next to it.

Does anyone else have this and what is its purpose.
Thanks.

Any add-on can add a toolbar icon. Disable your add-ons to see if the
icon disappears. Maybe you installed a download manager add-on.

I don't have any download managers , the orange circle appears next to
the standard download arrow on the main toolbar. This circle only appears
after several downloads in one session have been made, and it appears to
have no adverse effects

I think we need a screenshot. Try uploading the screenshot to an image
hosting site, then paste a link to it in your post.

I download a dozen files (from softpedia.com). No orange icon appeared
alongside the down arrow for downloads (I have that icon added to my
toolbar). I have never seen an orange icon show up (by any shape since
you didn't mention what it looks like) in Firefox's toolbar after doing
lots of downloads.

So you [think you] don't have any download managers. Did you yet try
running Firefox in its safe mode or disabling all add-ons in Firefox to
eliminate ANY add-on from generating the orange icon?

Wouldn't putting the bar into 'customze' mode and just resting the mouse
pointer over the mystery icon show something about what it is and where it
came from?

That might work if the popup hint bubble gave sufficient text to
describe the toolbar icon.

If the icon will move then move it to the customize tab and
it will tell you what the icon belongs to.

That just shows the same text as shown in the popup bubble hint when
hovering the mouse over the icon when it is placed in the toolbar.

I have never gotten a popup bubble. If it is the same then
it names the extension.

Original poster here.
I will put a link to a website when the orange circle next appears. It
only appears after about 30 consecutive downloads which I don't do
often. I did hover the mouse over the circle but no message appeared.
I don't know if it makes any difference but I have Electrolysis disabled.

ORIGINAL POSTER HERE

Recently done some more downloading and the orange circle appeared again
with latest Firefox,windows version.

I use Ant downloader which utilises the download button of Firefox so
that downloads can be viewed exactly the same as if downloading direct
from Firefox. The circle only appears after about 30 downloads. A screen
grab can be seen here
http://tinypic.com/r/215085g/9 apologies for poor quality etc , it
is the first time I have posted to a web image site.Incidentally as
mentioned before I have electrolysis disabled.

Could it be some sort of gentle nag/reminder that the author of Ant
would like the odd donation?

Assuming we're talking about the orange circle on the icon just to the
left of the magnifying glass one, the quality of your grab seems fine to
me.

(It isn't an email.)

From 2015:
"From the avast UI > Settings > Active Protection > Mail Shield >
Settings (gear icon) > Behavior - General section > "Uncheck" Insert
note into clean message (outgoing)."

If that doesn't work - from 2017:
1. Click the Avast icon to display the user interface panel.

2. Click "Settings"

3. Click "Enable Avast email signature" to remove the ticked box.

Close the user interface panel.

I just saw an orange circle next to the download icon (Firefox's, not
some add-on's since I don't use any download manager). The orange
circle was there just long enough so when I noticed it and clicked on
the down arrow to see my downloads that it was gone. The download
failed (was for Google Chrome --- yep, I'm a heretic). Then I did the
download again which succeeded so no orange circle.

I did not get the remaining download time progress bar that you showed
in your pic. That's because the download was only 1.1 MB (probably just
a web installer to pull the rest of the product). With you doing a long
queue of downloads, go see if some of them crashed, hung, or failed.
Click on that download toolbar icon to see the download progress window.

So you aren't seeing things. Or both of us are.

Now, if you'd said yellow dot instead of orange circle...

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/where-find-and-manage-downloaded-files-firefox

About half-way down:

Other files covered under download protection may be potentially unwanted downloads
(explained in the Google Policy) that may make unexpected changes to your computer.
Or, a download may not be malicious or unwanted but simply not commonly downloaded.
A yellow dot will appear on the Download arrow:

(Picture of the dot)

Click on the yellow-tagged Download arrow to open the Downloads panel.
The file name will be displayed with one of these warning messages:
This file may harm your computer.
This file is not commonly downloaded.

:)

Thanks very much for this info.

Its clear that my dots are connected with what you have written despite
the slight difference in colour.

I didn't know Firefox refers to Google to see if a download is safe.
I get none of the other info mentioned in the article. I often refer to
the download down list when downloading and apart from "cancelled" or
"failed" messages against a few files, say 3 out of 50, receive no other
warnings. Don't get any messages either clicking on the dot.
..
Interesting article, thanks.

Michael.
