Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-GB; rv:1.8.1.6)
Gecko/20070725 Firefox/2.0.0.6
which has stopped looking for updates. So looked in
Preferences/Advanced/Update
and saw that the first box ("Firefox") is crossed, but the word
"Firefox" is greyed out.
How does one ungrey that?

You are using Linux so you are tied to your distro upgrading FF/TB.
an easy way around this is to use ubuntuzilla.
http://ubuntuzilla.wiki.sourceforge.net/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ubuntuzilla
http://linux.softpedia.com/get/Internet/HTTP-WWW-/Ubuntuzilla-30545.shtml
It will notify you of updates. easy to use

OIC. Many thanks for the URLs, but I think I'll just look out
for reports on new versions and do manual replaces here on
Mandriva when the time seems ripe.

Unless FF is installed in your home directory, you probably do not have
write permission for the installation directory.
Try this:
Close out any open FF windows.
Open a command prompt window.
Enter: su -
Enter the root password when prompted.
Enter: firefox
Go to Help -> Check for Updates
Can you update now?

Yes!
(But the previous response indicated no auto-update for
Linux...)
However, I didn't allow the update as I've just been
reading some reports on broken Firefox after updating to
2.0.0.7, so will hold off until that all dies down.
Or was that only for Windows Firefox updates?
Many thanks!
(Will now look at changing access permission
to installation directory for me as 'user'.)

Done.

No, it was few random cases. 2.0.0.7 runs fine on Windows.

It's always darkest before dawn. So if you're going to steal the

Well, I tried the 2.0.0.7 update on my test-bed Kubuntu on
an external drive, and it's working fine - no problems.
So have just done same on Mandriva - all's well.
Many thanks for all help. Much appreciated...
The *root* user has always been allowed to update, AFAIK.

I see someone else has responded to that already, but I will just add
that I've not had a problem using the update process, on Windows or Linux.

Works in Ubuntu but not in PCLinxOs 2007.

Is that using their distribution of FF?
If so, I wonder if they have disabled the update function altogether, in
effect, forcing you to use their "official", distro-specific updates.
Unless, of course, you install the version directly from mozilla.org. :-)

Yes they have completely disabled the autoupdate function. I have Ubuntu
on one machine, PCLinuxOs on another. I find a couple of things I think
I like a little better on PCLinuxOs a little better but over all Ubuntu
is better IMHO.
