Yup. This knowledge base article covers it:

Hi Chris,
I expect "it" means the master password, in which case the "Yup" would certainly
not come from that article. Losing all the passwords is certainly not what the
poster is looking for.

No, not to my knowledge.

Uh, Chris. The OP wants to RECOVER that data, not lose it, which
reseting the master password certainly WILL do. Lose it, that is, NOT
recover it.

Here is a Nirsoft program that will allow you to look at the password info:

forgetting any master password is a bad thing to do. i know from my own
experiences.

there are many programs out there to recover passwords.

some free, many for pay.

some very simple. some elaborate.

here are links to free and simple.

they recover *all* passwords so you can kill off old master and site
passwords and re-enter. [cut and paste]

go to site link and save page. go offline, open page, recover passwords.

site:
http://edmullen.info/
map:
http://edmullen.info/sitemapreal.php
page: Export Mozilla Passwords;
http://edmullen.net/mozilla/display_moz_passwords.html
---
site:
http://the-edmeister.com/
page: Firefox-3 Passwords Information;
http://the-edmeister.com/firefox_info/articles/List_Firefox-3_Passwords.htm
---

with either page, read page source for instructions.

not exactly what you asked for, but, end results are same. 8^P

Actually that is OK. I have all my passwords in a separate encrypted
database, so I don't really mind starting fresh.

Interesting. I will try it on a backup copy to see how easy it is.

It sure makes having a master password not really that secure.....

Thank you very much. I use TrueCrypt to encrypt my important data. Hope
recovering its passwords is not that easy!

is google easy?

use "truecrypt decrypt free" in a google search.

you may be disappointed. 8^(

a lot, is there not?

this link takes you in like it says;

http://www.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en&num=100

then enter in;

"all these words:" password AND master AND free

"this exact wording or phrase:" decrypt+truecrypt

press <enter>

I don't see it. Or am I missing the point? I was under the
impression you were suggesting it wasn't hard to crack TrueCrypt and
that a Google search would point you in the right direction. I
couldn't find it, and following your advanced search I still don't see
it. Rather I see the opposite, that even the FBI were unable to crack
it. Did I miss your point or am I not seeing what you are seeing for
hits?

in the above (truncated) link, i did not read all links. of 3 that i did
look at, they related to breaking 'truecrypt'.

> Or am I missing the point?

yes and no.

true

"yea/nea", they are both there.

add

-fbi

to search bar.

> Did I miss your point or am I not seeing what you are seeing for hits?

if you used link i posted and 17 hits, among those hits you will find
where it 'is' and 'is not' crackable.

so, to turn this back around, enter;

password AND master "decrypt+firefox"

in search bar for 96 hits.

i did not read all of them. of what i did look at, one will find what is
needed to crack firefox's master and site passwords.

I guess, that I'm missing something.

They say, that they can obtain the encryption key if the PC is powered
up and if a dtruecrypt drive is mounted.

In other words.

If a truecrypt drive is NOT mounted they are not able to retriefe the
encryption key from RAM.

This sounds barely like a major concern and is the same problem for all
disk encryption SW without special hardfware.
