Hi,

I want to restrict the browser access so that no URLs with the file:// protocol can be opened anymore. In Google Chrome one can use the option BlacklistURL=file://* to block access to all those URLs, but for Mozilla Firefox I couldn’t find a way. Please let me know if there is a setting I can use to block access to the file:// protocol.

Best regards,

Clemens

I am intrigued. File:// is a function to access files on the local
hard drives. These same files are accessable using the OS file manager,
and opened with the default program. ie I can access the file from
Firefox with File:\\ or with File Explorer.

What does blocking this function in the browser accomplish?

Hi Keith,

in my case there exists no file manager. We are talking here about a pretty restricted Linux system, with patched GTK2 + GTK3 dialogs, etc. so that only the default open/save folder can be used to open and save files. The only thing we still need to restrict it that the Firefox browser cannot browse the file system as we only want to provide a browser, which should be used to surf the web and not browse the local Linux system.

The question is still the same: Does something like a setting to blacklist specific URLs in Firefox or disable the file:// protocol handler at all?

Best regards,
Clemens

Have you noticed since everyone has a camcorder these days no one talks
about seeing UFOs like they used to?

So I take it you are trying to set up a computer as might be found in a
library, where it is basically a kiosk for the web. with all other
function blocked.

You should review the section on Trimming and Reformatting.
