On some web pages I see 'funny characters' instead of German umlauts,
e.g. here:
http://lissh.lvn.parlanet.de/cgi-bin/starfinder/0?path=samtflmore.txt&id=fastlink&pass=&search=ID=1182&format=WEBVOLLLANG

The page looks OK in Chrome and IE.

How can rectify the situation?

You need to change the Character encoding in Options on the main window
to match the character encoding that matches that used in on the website.

All of the characters on that website come through correctly when you
have the Character Encoding set to Unicode.

Please note that if you change the Encoding in the message window it is
changed for that window, if you change it in the main page it changes
the default to that code.

Interesting. The page opens with Western and shows just fine.
When I choose Unicode, it becomes a mess.

Thanks for your reply, but I'm not quite sure where exactly to change
what exactly, sorry.

Any why do Chrome an IE display the text correctly without 'user
intervention'?

In Firefox there is a setting to automatically detect the Character
encoding. I suspect they have a similar setting and it is set to Automatic

However you should set the default to provide the code that is in
general use by the people you correspond with and the newsgroups you
use. This default code is the character code that will be used for your
email and newsgroup post.

This is set by going into Options Display Advance Settings.

I've found that sometimes Umlauts and other non-English characters
display properly, and sometimes they don't. I've given up trying to
tweak the settings.

I think it has to do with the two standards for character set encoding,
ASCII and ANSI. Unicode is supposed to get around the incompatibilities,
or so I've read somewhere, but clearly there is still not a universal
character-code standard.

Have a good day,

Same thing here, Western looks fine and Unicode is messy.

The site displays fine here without user intervention. I don't see any
character encoding set for the page looking at the source code of the
page created using HTML 2.0, I could have missed it.

Even the source code displays the umlauts.

I don't see anywhere in my Firefox to select Unicode. The only place I
can think of would be Tools > Options > Content > Advanced "Character
Encoding for Legacy Content", "Fallback Character Encoding". Mine is set
to "Default for Current Locale". I don't see Unicode in the list of choices.

When you're on that page in Firefox click View on the Menu Bar then
Character Encoding and check the setting. On my FF it's set to Western
and Auto Detect is Off and the page is working fine.

Oh, that's where Unicode is! Mine is set to Unicode.

When I load the page it automagically changes to Western, and the page
renders just fine.

Now back to disabling the Menu bar.

I think you're getting confused here between Firefox and Thunderbird. ???
As far as I know, Character coding in Thunderbird doesn't affect coding
in Firefox.

Interesting, than you.

Mine was set to Unicode, with Auto Detect off. Have now enabled Auto Detect.

I think you maybe correct.

The character encoding in Firefox is set in

Tools, Options, Content, Advance. It is at the bottom of this window.

The character encoding in Thunderbird is set in

Tools, Options, Display, Advance.

In addition the encoding of individual items can be changed from either
the composition Window in View, Character Encoding.
