entering umlauts in FF. can I set it to convert ae, oe etc. to umlauts?

Often I type messages in German in FF windows for composition via gmail,
etc. It is great that FF can spell check in German. Same problem in TB.

But I always find myself without an easy way to type umlauts etc. on my
English keyboard. Is there an easy way to do this?

In fact, it is a convention to use ae, oe etc. (I think!) as a poor-mans
alternative. [Maybe I am wrong; my German is very basic] Is there a way to
somehow make FF catch these and convert on the fly?

What other solutions are out there? In the past I have found some
character-set entry programs but they tend to be clunky for such a trivial
need....

For Fx 1.5.x and 2.0.x, there was the Zombie Keys extension,
<http://zombiekeys.bolay.us/>. It works fine with Fx 3.0.x, but
requires bumping,

tried it with Fx 3.5.

You could install a 'virtual keyboard' - one that does German. That will
work with any program and will give you characters such as ß as well.

I use xvkbd in Linux. There must be dozens available for Windows.

From your newsreader (Xnews), I will assume (rightly or wrongly) that
your operating system is Windows.


Check which United Kingdom keyboard layout is configured in your
installation of Windows. If you have Windows XP, this setting is at
"Control Panel � Regional and Language Options � Languages � Details".


If you are using Microsoft's "United Kingdom Extended" keyboard layout
(which was shipped with Windows XP Service Pack 2), the you can type
umlauts like this

1. Hold down the Right-hand Alt (or AltGR) key and type a " (SHIFT 2).
2. Type the letter to go under the umlaut (e.g. u)
