After installing the latest Windows 7 updates I rebooted. When I started
Firefox it would check for add-ons that are incompatible. Always came up
with ForcastFox. Whatever I did (cancel, or check for ...) it would just
restart Firefox and go through the same thing over and over.

How do I get out of this Firefox vicious circle?

Better descrption, firefox update window keeps re-opening. Can't get rid
of it even with Windows Task manager!

One of these should work:

a) Start FF in safe mode (no add-ons enabled). When it opene, go to
add-ons folders, and Remove ForecastFox.
Or:
b)
Go to the plugins folder, and delete ForecastFox.

Install the updated version of ForcastFox if you really need it.

The better option is to follow Wolf K's advice.

Thank you for replying.
I don't know how to start FF in safe mode. So I went into its profile
folder and deleted ForecastFox.sqlite and forecastfox.jar. Rebooted and
the vicious circle continues.

Can't install or uninstall anything because Firefox is stuck in this
update loop.

Can't you shut your computer down then reboot? Might take a power down
if you only have FF open.

Rebooted about 4 times. Finally, since this happened immediately after
the latest Windows 7 update, I restored to before that update and then
Firefox finally opened normally. Phew!

Enough to send you to another browser!

To start Firefox in safe Mode go to the menu bar, click on Help >
restart with add-ons disabled. If you have the latest Firefox version
with the Australis UI then click on the new menu button (3 horizontal
lines) top right on navigation bar, then at the bottom of the next
window click on the ? icon and then restart with add-ons disabled.

Regarding Wolf K's second suggestion I presume he meant the Extensions
folder in the Firefox profile folder -
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-firefox-stores-user-data#w_how-do-i-find-my-profile
Note if you are deleting Forecastfox from the profile folder then all
instances of Firefox must first be closed.

Once you have removed or deleted Forecastfox restart Firefox and
reinstall the latest version of Forecastfox.

Why did you start Firefox before you fixed the problem by getting rid of
the bad addon?

I deleted the add-on from the profile folder and because that did not
solve the problem, I rebooted to clear the memory which did not solve
the problem.

I did not realize the correct procedure would have been to reboot (which
was the only way for me to stop the "Firefox update" window, then delete
the add on from the profile folder _before_ testing Firefox again. I did
not realize that as long as the annoying update folder was showing (only
rebooting would close it) Firefox was re-writing the addon to the
profile folder and my deletions had no effect.

I could not close Firefox with all addons closed because it never got to
that stage! I was stuck at the "Firefox Update" window. Sort of a catch 22.

Next time you want to start FF in safe mode where you can't go
Help>>Start with addons disabled, After reboot, if that's what it takes,
Hold down the Shift key while Firefox is starting and it will be in safe
mode. Then you can disable/delete the the offending addon/s.
Have a better day.
