I have the extension "Java Quick Starter 1.0" installed. I also have the
latest Java Console 6.0.20. Do I really need this Quick Starter or is it
now obsolete?

If you open the Java applet in the Control Panel, go to Advanced >
Miscellaneous, you should be able to uncheck "Java Quick Starter". That
will make Java Quickstart disappear from Firefox's extensions.

That's what I've done from the beginning. I can't say I've noticed a
difference, so that why I always uncheck Java Quick Starter (mind you,
it's a real PITA to uncheck this every time Java is updated).
