I'm setting up Firefox 16 on a new laptop. Adding www. and .com are
defaults in about:config. However when I type CBS in location bar,
Google takes it and does a search. It doesn't do this on my desktop with
Firefox 15.1. What do I need to do so I don't have to type www and com?
Thanks,

I typed zxyzzyz in the address bar and got back

"Sorry, We could not find www.zxyzzyz.com

"It may be unavailable or may not exist. Try using the suggestions or
related links below, or search again using our web search."

This was from my ISP (VZ) using Yahoo! Search.

Ctrl+Enter adds the www. and .com automatically.

It's in about:config

Change

keyword. enabled to false

Now typing cbs brings up cbs.com, not a google search

What that also does is break the keyword functionality of bookmarks,
which I use pretty often. (If you're not familiar with what I'm talking
about, go to Bookmarks, Show All Bookmarks, and one of the columns is
Keyword. If you don't see that column, right-click on any of the column
headers and select Keyword.)

Just what is the "keyword functionality of bookmarks"?

To add another example relating to the article that Chris provided a
link to, my bookmark for Wikipedia consists of the following:

Name: Wikipedia
Location: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search?search=%s
Keyword: wiki

Now, for example, if I want to search Wikipedia on time travel, I go to
the address bar and type in: wiki time travel
