Firefox Portable keeps crashing

I recently reinstalled PortableApps on my wife's USB stick in a
(misguided) attempt to rectify a Thunderbird Portable problem (which
turned out to be due to a mysterious corruption of prefs.js - see "TB
Portable 'lost contact'" thread in the TB group).

Since I reinstalled PortableApps Firefox Portable is no longer usable,
i.e. it briefly starts up and then crashes.

It says an error log is created but I'm not sure whether that's just a
generic Windows message or whether the log (where would I find it?)
could in fact be helpful for diagnosing the problem.

Any comments/suggestions?

You primary question appears to be what Reg replied to, but check out...

The primary cause of crashes in Firefox appears to be "AVG Safe Search"
look in your extensions to see if you have it. It is installed without asking
you in the install/update of AVG Anti-Virus Free. The extension can be
disabled but takes extra effort to uninstall,
see "Problematic extensions" for that and other potential problems.

HTH,
David McRitchie, extensions I use are briefly documented on my site
Firefox Custom: http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/firefox/firefox.htm

David,

Thanks for your reply.

As far as I am aware AVG Anti-Virus Free was never installed on my
wife's computer - it had AVG Anti-Malware a while back but I replaced it
with Kaspersky Internet Security 2009 some time ago. However, I'll
certainly check it out.

Nevertheless, the crashing problem seems to be directly related to the
re-installation of PortableApps - it worked perfectly OK before and
after the reinstallation it started crashing consistently - very odd.

Hi Reg,

Thanks for your reply - I'll report back once there is something to report.

Hi David,

I gave up in the end and decided to make a fresh start with a new USB
stick and a new portable FF profile (although I transferred my wife's
existing TB profile).

Everything appears to be back to normal now 8-)
