Is Java in Firefox mostly for games? When else does FF use Java?

For security I figured I would disable it, since I'm not sure I really
need it on!

I've never really needed Java for anything other than games. I keep it
enabled, but it probably would be more secure if I disabled it.

no. it is for more than just games.

some times you need it for page linking, some times you do not.

to elaborate, many sites require java to be enabled so that you can use
links which are java based. most of these sites test for java and will
throw up a message telling you that you need to have java enabled.

a very easy way to control java is with;
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/722

to find out more about 'noscript', log;
http://noscript.net/

i would suggest that when you set up options, under the 'plugins' tab,
'[x] forbid java'.

this way any new site you visit will have java disabled and you will
see notices within page that java is disabled. then if you wish you
can enable it.

you can temporarily enable any site you wish or set sites you know as
trusted and java will run on them.

btw. being that you like to repeat questions with slightly difference in
wording, i thought i would do same.

hth.

I know of many bank and government sites in my area that use Java
applets for secure/encrypted login. Many of them even use the exact
same Java applet developed under a government contract.

But yes, Java is mobile code and as such should be enabled only for the
handful of selected sites that really need it.
