Firefox 4 is available on the FTP:
ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/4.0/
I think it is not the final version since it should be there on the main
web site. It's not there on the ppa (Using Ubuntu 10.10).
The release is near :) Yay!
Putting it up on the FTP server and letting it propagate to FTP mirrors
is just part of the release process. The release is still scheduled for
tomorrow.
Just to change the ftp to http and you'll have your answer. :-)

As I understand it, the RC IS the final version. They just repackaged
it, and it will be released on Wednesday, unless something drastic goes
wrong.
Finally!! Let's hope popular add-ons could catch up...

Does anyone know if this is a fresh install or if it will be offered as an
update to 3.x or the 4RC
Bill
Firefox 3.x is a different version and continued updates will be
released for them.
Firefox 4 is a completely new and separate release.

But it /can/ be installed on top of 3.x (or not?).

Tomorrow, it will be available to Firefox 3.6 users who click on "Check
for Updates". Probably 3.5 users as well. I don't about Firefox 4 RC users.
When things have calmed down, Mozilla will turn on the software update
advertisement, asking users if they want to update to Firefox 4.
Yes, it can. It does by default.
A couple of days ago I installed the FF RC1 and it wanted to install on
top of Version 3. What did I do wrong.
I did installed into the \Program Files\Mozilla Firefox 40
I never could get it to find the Windows Media player, so I uninstalled
it and figured I would reinstall it when the official release occurred.
Per the Windows Media player it is the current version.
Will the official release find the Windows Media player and install it
properly.

Thanks I will wait and see. I have better luck with updates offered
Bill
This is what I observed on my Vista installation.
The Windows Media Player plug-in version 1.0.0.8 is installed, but it
resides in the FF3 plugins folder under 'Program Files\Firefox'. I.e.
it's not installed 'globally', and FF4 won't detect it when installed in
a different folder than FF3.
It's easy to fix though, just copied the np-mswmp.dll file from FF3
plugins folder to FF4 plugins folder.

There have been a few reports of problems that might be down to that, but I
installed over the top of 3.x without a hitch. Unless there are some very
quick updates, it will break a lot of extensions though! The new Add-on
Compatibility Reporter extension enables nearly all of them for the time
being, though.

Yes, you can install over 3.6, but I strongly recommend you move your
3.6 profile somewhere safe and make a new profile for 4.0. The move
your bookmarks and password files over to the new profile. You will
need to reinstall the old extensions if you do it this way. Some of the
extensions won't work on 4.0, so just tossing 4.0 your old profile may
cause so issues which are difficult to diagnose, and correct.
If you wish, you can just backup the 3.6 profile, then install 4.0 and
see if you have issues. If so, a new profile is the best way to handle
those issues.
In my case uninstalling 4 RC before a clean instal of 4 Final seemed to
be advisable because my first attempt to update 4 RC did not
alter/remove the old 4 Beta 11 /Beta 12 folders.

That's what I usually do: make a backup and then install a new 'major'
version on top of the old one. (I also have a weekly backup of the
profile folder.)

What time zone? It's my understanding that it will be Wednesday in the

Come to think of it, there's an alternative. I could uninstall 3.6.15,
leave the profile folder unharmed and then install 4.0. Keith Nuttle
mentions 4.0 is installed in \Program Files\Mozilla Firefox 40, a
different folder, so...
I did the same when I upgraded avast! from 5.x to 6.x. 6.x uses a new
directory, however, when installed over 5.x, the old directory stayed
the same. To prevent future problems I uninstalled and reinstalled 6.x.

Keith Nuttle: I forced it into that directory since I did not want 30
overwritten

Is this some new way of installing I've not heard about or are you just
saying to double click Firefox to run it?
I think you mean the latter.
Ah those lucky(?) Windows users that have check for update available.
Not an option in Linux versions installed from the repository.
So which version will those that chose not to update get in April when
the next 3.5.x and 3.6.x versions are available?
WLS
PST
I guess that depends on the distro. My only Linux experience is on
Ubuntu, and they usually offer the new major version very quickly.

Help|About Firefox|Check for Updates
At least for the 4.0 I'm running. I've updated 4.0 once, but I see no
indication of exactly which version I updated to; it still just says
4.0, but both firefox and firefox-bin are dated March 14.
And while we're at it, what is the purpose of these two files along with
run-mozilla.sh?

Thank you for this hint! I hadn't noticed it.

I am getting the offer to update today. Is the "offer to update" somehow
different from "a new update is available"?
Am using FF 3.6
That's odd. When I checked for updates an hour or two later, the offer
to update was gone.
If you downloaded Firefox from the Mozilla website instead of the
package manager, "Check for Updates" will be available.
installed it today, in an entirely new folder, running an entirely fresh
profile... only addon so far is adbock...
all is well so far...
