I would like to completely remove these programs and reinstall them on
my computer. I will install over them if I must but that does not
really solve the issue that I have. The problem is that I cannot remove
Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.7 and Mozilla Thunderbird 1.5.0.7 from Add/Remove
programs. I wanted to try and remove them and try to install them again
for a clean install in case they are corrupted. I click on remove and
the computer waits a second or two and jumps to the top. The operating
system is 98 Second Edition which is older but it works really well for
me and I already tri-boot with XP Professional and Windows Vista on a
separate hard disk in two separate partitions with NTFS and 98SE is
under Fat32 file system.

suggest you stick with WinXP Pro as it is by far the most stable OS
Microsoft has yet produced. If you have trouble uninstalling a program,
the 'standard' approach is to install the same version over the old
install, then try uninstall again. If this doesn't work, then it is
possible to manually uninstall the software, but this required editing
the registry which is not a job for the squeamish.

The real question is why you fee you need to uninstall and clean install
these applications. Perhaps a new profile will serve the purpose.

I tri-boot with 98SE, XP Pro. and Windows Vista and need 98SE for older
legacy programs like Space for Windows 3.1 that will not work in XP Pro.
I do not mind editing the registry and this is child's play to me.
Please continue in depth on editing the registry to remove the program
and continue with a full and clean install of Mozilla Firefox and
Mozilla Thunderbird. I am the owner of this machine and it will not
dictate to me what I can and cannot do if I have anything to say about
it. Thanks in advance for your response and this power user looks
forward to hearing back from you.

lets see, you probably let FF and TB automatically update itself. Am
I correct on this. It seems when you do this, the uninstall part is
broken. Download the full version, install that and uninstall, then
reinstall:

FF: ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/1.5.0.7
TB: ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/thunderbird/releases/1.5.0.7

Generally, is possible to get older programs to run on XP by using
compatibility settings. Unfortunately, we all have to abandon old
software sometime in order to be able to use the newer things.

As for manual uninstall;
Make sure the program(s) are terminated.
Delete the directory for that program in Program Files.
Delete the profile in your profiles directory for the program.
Then use the registry editor program to find and delete all entries
pertaining to Mozilla, Firefox, and Thunderbird.
Reboot to make sure you are using the new registry.

Note that the deleting of items from the registry is VERY tedious, and
you must be careful to not delete something you need by accident.
Backing up the files before you start is a good idea (although I never
do as WinXP does this automatically).

Since the above procedures are prone to error, you should try all other
less drastic solutions first. I recently spend DAYS eliminating all the
Norton Internet Security things manually. Believe me, it was worth the
effort.

Thanks. I did an install over with the full versions of Mozilla
Thunderbird and Mozilla Firefox. It works fine now but someday if I am
bored I will completely remove them, their associated registry entries
and everything else and install them cleanly once again. (The
add/remove does not work even with installing them again)

This post was helpful and thanks again. I will indeed try the
uninstaller. The operating system it will not remove from is 98SE and
the post stated that there is a bug with it that will not remove from
add/remove programs in ME and 98SE is very similar to ME except much
better in my opinion. The reason I feel 98SE is better than ME is that
98SE has run programs that I have not been able to run in ME and also ME
removes the easy restart to MS-DOS mode when shutting down. According
to Chris Quirke, MVP -- ME does have better generic driver support than
98SE however. It amuses me that I have a 9800 XT Ati -- 256 megs. of
video with 8x AGP support and that it runs in 98SE through the Windows
ME driver(s). I guess one can remove the registry traces left behind
after the uninstaller but I may just use the unistaller and then
reinstall Mozilla Firefox. A few extra registry entries don't really
bother me that much after all. <grin>

Bill Gates -- Heaven or Hell continued . . . "This is great!" he tells
God, "If this is Hell, I REALLY want to see Heaven!" "Fine," says
God, and off they go. Heaven is a high place in the clouds, with
angels drifting about playing harps and singing. It's very nice but
not as enticing as Hell. Bill thinks for a moment and announces his
decision. "Hmm, I think I prefer Hell." he tells God. "Fine," says
God, "As you desire." So Bill Gates is taken to Hell. Two weeks
later, God decides to check up on Bill to see how he's doing in Hell.
When God arrives in Hell, he finds Bill shackled to a wall, screaming
amongst the hot flames in a dark cave. He's being burned and tortured
by demons. "How's everything going, Bill?" God asks. Bill replies,
his voice full of anguish and disappointment, "This is awful, it's not
what I expected at all, I can't believe it. What happened to that
other place with the beaches and the beautiful women playing in the
water?" God smiles and says, "That was the screen saver."

That's the spirit, now you're ready for linux!

One word of caution: although I have never followed this advice, it's
sensible to NOT run as root -- everybody says so, so it must be true.
By the time I found this out it was too late, I was hooked.

On 24.09.2006 03:13, CET - what odd quirk of fate caused The Real Bev
to generate the following:? :

same goes for Windows.... never (even as *the only user* ) run as
Administrator... always create a user-profile for yourself.
by the way - I also haven't followed this "advice"

You've been lucky, that's all. Everyone makes mistakes. Yours is
coming :-)

Tell me. What can you do as root that you couldn't do as $USER?
Besides rm -rf /

Since you like living dangerously, here's a game you can play:

[ $[ $RANDOM % 6 ] == 0 ] && rm -rf / || echo "Still breathing, eh?"

Save to file `rroulette' and chmod +x.
