I've recently upgraded to Fedora-16/KDE,
with firefox-7.0.1-3.fc16.i686,
and seem to have lost the Google Translate facility
which allowed me to hover over words in Corriere della Sera,
translating them into English.

Has this indeed disappeared for ever?
And if so, is there any substitute or near-substitute?
Any suggestions gratefully received.

Google translate worked fine, the last time
(yesterday) I used it. But not with hover,
type in in one language, the other appears.

I don't think that is something that was ever part of Firefox. Perhaps
it was added by an extension.

Sounds like he may have had the Google Toolbar installed which did in
fact disappear and is no longer available for Firefox, a decision by
Google not Firefox.

Would I have this if I went over to Chrome?

Would you have a Google Toolbar? Why? It's Google from the ground up.
As for translate. I use the extension IM Translate on FF (9 beta),
and it works fine. I use it to translate Spanish to English as many of
my friends are Hispanic, and I don't speak Spanish. Most of the younger
posters use so much 'Spanglish' that the translations are pretty 'iffy'.
But it does work.

I don't know. That's something you would get a better answer asking in
the Chrome forum. For Firefox, you can use the Translate This extension,
available at
<https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/translate-this/>.
It uses the new Add-ons SDK, so it shouldn't cause any performance
degradation, and you don't have to restart Firefox to install it.

In fact, there's a good video of someone create the same type of add-on
in 5 minutes. See <http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKN4_fOKEWQ>. :)

Thanks very much for your response.

I tried installing the Translate This extension,
but it didn't seem to do anything.
Am I meant to also install the Add-ons SDK or Add-on Builder?

This was far too rapid for me to make sense of it.
I wonder if the program he wrote is actually available anywhere?

Incidentally, I also installed Chromium,
and an add-on that was supposed to have the same effect there,
but that didn't work for me either.
(It translated whole pages, but not a word I hovered over or highlighted.)

The TranslateThis addon will not install here on my FF 8.0, says
something to the effect that it cannot be installed because of a file
error. Tried several times with no luck. The addon description doesn't
say that FF 8.0 is not compatible.

The error report I got was:
Translate This! could not be installed because Firefox cannot modify the

The Add-ons SDK is built into Firefox, so it should work.
If it isn't, you can try the gTranslate extension at
<https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/gtranslate/>

There are many out there. see

YES

I use Google Translate at least several times a week as I frequent the
German Genealogy newsgroups which are in German and my German is much
less than perfect.

I access it from the main Google page, but it leads to that URL

I am currently running FF 8.0 on Windows XP SP3.

Sorry to persist, but is a word translated when you hover over it?

More to the point, when I go to that URL, I'm told
"Google Toolbar for Firefox is only supported in Firefox 2.0 to 4.0"
and I am unable to install it.

This is a support question that I answer many times, and the response is:

There will be no update of the Google Toolbar to work with Firefox 5 or
any later version of Firefox because Firefox users have most of the
features built-in and have alternatives.

If you mean; are alternate translations offered when I move the cursor
over the translated text on the Google Translation window, then the
answer is yes.

Just checked it.

I have not checked this but sort of evolved knowledge, I believe there
are words/phrases where there are alternate translations and there
words/phrases where there are no alternates in the Google Database.
With the later words/phrases you would not see an alternate when the
cursor is over the word.

PS I have never found a problem of using Google Translate while using FF
3 through the current version FF8

I think there is probably a misunderstanding between us.
I am referring to a facility which was available in Fedora-15 Firefox,
which translated a single word in a web-page in Italian
if my mouse hovered over the word for a second or two.
The whole page was not translated,
which I suspect you are talking about.

The URL mentioned above does not provide this facility, at least for me.

As the OP (I think), may I ask again my original question.
I am running Fedora-16/KDE with Firefox.
Under Fedora-15 I had a facility which enabled me
when I was reading a web-page in Italian (with Firefox)
to hover over a word with my mouse,
and after a second or so I was offered an English translation.

Nb The whole page was not translated into English;
just the word I was hovering over.

I have not been able to find any addon or extension in Firefox-7.0.1
(under Fedora-16/KDE) offering this.

Am I missing something obvious?

Yes, you are not telling us what this mysterious facility is. If it was
the Google Toolbar, it is no longer available for Firefox 5.0 and above.

Give more information, maybe someone can help. Not that they haven't
already.

Here are two, I think the second one looks more promising, sorry did not go through
thread, but did check that your are the original poster and still have a question.
I agree with Chris, this would not have been builtin, and would have been an extension
or packaged elsewhere.

What version of Firefox came with Fedora 15?

I just installed the Google Toolbar in my Firefox 3.6.24 and one of the
toolbar options, under Tools is "Translate words by hovering over them."

Maybe Fedora installed the Toolbar for you.

I normally use this directly:

<http://translate.google.com/>

I don't normally like lots of toolbars on my system.

Not sure if Bing has their own toolbar but they seem to have a translate
facility:

<http://www.microsofttranslator.com/>

Good luck.
