Anyone know of a web extension replacement for the Tab Group legacy
add-on? Or an easy quick way to do the same thing using no extension in
FF? This add-on is very useful to me. Thanks.

I haven't tested any of this yet, but keeping an eye on; not sure if
they are all WE:

https://github.com/denschub/firefox-tabgroups

I have found using the Containers experiment together with these 2
add-ons works:
https://addons.mozilla.org/fr/firefox/addon/sea-containers: sidebar
showing all containers with their tabs
https://addons.mozilla.org/fr/firefox/addon/switch-container: allows to
switch a tab from one container to the other

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/conex/

I never had a need for tab groups until Containers. I have been
wondering how I could group them.

Thanks for the tip and links.

I posted about this on Jan 28, but did not really get the response I was
hoping for. Someone did pointed out the use of Containers though...

In the meanwhile, I downgraded to Fx 52.4.1 x64, so I can hang on a bit
longer to my precious Tabs Groups.

Not compatible with FF57 (yet).
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/tab-groups/

Once the missing APIs for managing tabs will become available this
extension looks like the most promising alternative to Tab Groups.

I'm somewhat skeptical about using containers as a replacement for Tab
Groups. They seem to be entirely different things to me addressing
different problems.
But I may be wrong with this. I'll certainly keep an eye on what's going
on with containers and tab management.
For the time being I do use containers, but not for the purpose of
managing tabs.

Divider Tabs is a Chrome extension, and I'm not sure if it would run in
FF, or will be made compatible with FF.
In any case, it looks more reasonable to me for managing tabs than
containers. But I still like the former Tab Groups approach a whole lot
better.

What's your point?
The old Tab Groups extension is dead.

How do people interpret the reported straight up rewrite/replacement of Tab Groups?

Development may be dead, but the add-on still works.

Yeah, I saw that. I read the IRC log, but there is no Github up yet,
nothing but this guy saying a replacement is in the works. I'm not too
worried tho, since the API for hiding tabs is coming along. By the time
I upgrade from 52ESR (in about a year?) there should be a decent Eye
Candy alternative.

I disabled Firefox updates to ensure I had a working tab groups legacy addon. Is there any news yet about a WE addon that can do the same?

I'm not too bothered about the graphical view of groups, just a list of tab groups with a list of tabs within each group would be fine. Mostly i move tabs between groups with right-click options.

Good day. Have you looked up earlier in this thread here? I listed a few
alternatives. I haven't heard of the promised addOn that would look just
like Tab Groups yet, but the API for hiding tabs has landed in Firefox.

None of them works in a way Tab Groups does. :( Conex is quite close but still lacks in many interesting aspects. Containers are not useful as a grouping tabs and aren't working properly with DevTools.

Learned of TWO TabGroups replacements that DO look and work like the old
one:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/panorama-view/
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/basic-panorama/

What a relief. I picked the Panorama View add-on for now.
Thanks for posting this.

Thank god! Tnx for pointing this out!

I've installed Panorama View. Any idea on how to import groups from Tab
Groups? I can browse and find tabGroups-manual-20180517-201959.json, but
nothing happens.

The link above says:

| Waiting for API
|
| Import/restore backup (basic implementation added, discarded option in tabs.create() or a proper sessionStore API is prefered)

Does this mean this feature doesn't work yet?

I just noticed the "Issues" tab and there's at least one user who is
experiencing (almost) the same thing:

<https://github.com/photodiode/panorama-view/issues/55>

This was 17 days ago and no new version since, so I guess I'll just have
to be patient. If all else fails I'll add my groups manually.
