I just checked and found that my about:config is just a mess of
variables left by extensions/ scripts, and that runs in some cases pages
long and about:config doesn't allow us to select the entire bunch a
delete in one go. We have to select those one by one and hit reset.

Does ff store about:config settings in some txt/ xml file which is
editable? Where?

What other garbage needs to be removed from my ff settings and how to
remove that?

While we are at it, I think uninstallation should not be left to
extensions/ sripts because developers are not disciplined enough to tak
care of such niceties especially for those users who are uninstalling
them. And FF has to face the music that it gets bulky and works slow.

FF should note down what all things any extension/ script is putting
anywhere in our profile, and ff must remove all those things when that
extension/ script gets installed.

Also, more options should be provided to search/ replace about:config
more easily. Maybe they should just give a "restore default" thingy in
there.

Take a look at the prefs.js file in the Firefox profile folder. This is
where extensions seem to mostly store their variables. Provided no
instance of firefox is running, one can safely remove data from this file.
From experience, it's probably best to backup this file in case of
errors :-/

Once the cleanup is done, open firefox and you'll see the changes reflected
in the state of the about:config data

Holy gosh.

I checked and found that there is one prefs.js.bak dated April 20th,
2007 (I must have made that backup) that is 9 KB, and the prefs.js dated
today that is a whooping 124 KB.

So much garbage has accumulated in less than 3 months.

btw, what would happen if I just delete prefs.js file. Wouldn't ff
recreate the file with basic minimal working default settings that I can
change? And all extensions would revert back to default settings that I
can change? No?

IIRC that's what will happen, but just in case make that backup copy
first :)

no, you didn't, FF did. If you had a crash [or something else] it would
have created that.

Tip: Please don't put this dash dash [--] within the body of the
message. If you accidently put a space after the dashes [-- ], then it
would turn into a sig file delimiter, and when I reply, everything below
would be wiped out and cause me [and others replying] all sorts of
problems. Thanks.

thats what I do with no problems whatsoever.

On 04.07.2007 20:48, CET - what odd quirk of fate caused EE to generate
the following:? :

..... and also, look to see if you have a userprefs.js... there may well
be some "residue" there as well!

Pardon.

There is no userpres.js in my profile folder.

Hope everything is alright. :-(
