A website I visit occasionally has a comments section after each
article; that comment section is managed by Disqus. I have somehow made
all the comments on all the articles of that website disappear and I
can't figure out how to turn it back on. I thought the website itself
had disabled discussions but it turns out the comment sections for the
site I am visiting is perfectly visible in Chrome; it's just not visible
in Firefox 53.0.2.

The site in question *was* blocked in Options/Contents/Notifications - I
don't remember doing that, certainly not in the timeframe since this
problem began (this time yesterday). I deleted the site's entry from
there and that is supposed to make the site ask me if it can give me
notifications but that hasn't happened yet.

I'd appreciate if someone could tell me how to make the comments
sections on the website visible again.

Perhaps you could give us a link to test it here on our machines.    I have 53.0 but I don't think it makes any difference.  The OS is Windows 10 so this might be relevant here.

Without a link to a website, it's hard to give specific information
pertinent to that site, so these are some things that may be pertinent
to Disqus but omits anything that may be specific to that website that
is preventing even the linking to Disqus:

Disqus needs cookies to work. For some browser/website combinations,
that includes the need for third-party cookies. One page I landed on
indicated that tracking cookies have to be allowed. That might also mean
no incognito mode for Firefox or, if you insist on incognito, set the
options to allow tracking even when incognito (options -> privacy).

Disqus also uses JavaScript, so NoScript or other script blocker may
have to be temporarily disabled or the relevant sites white-listed.

If you are using Avast Online Secuirty extension, turn off "Do Not
Track".

Firefox also has a "do not track" option: from Options -> Privacy ->
click on "manage your Do Not Track settings". You want "Always apply Do
Not Track" UNchecked if I am reading this correctly. (There is a Mozilla
page about this that says you can control it on a per-site basis when a
tracking shield appears in the address bar. I have no idea if that
information is current or not.)

Does any of this sound like how your Firefox and your Chrome might be
configured differently?

Some links I have been looking at about this and which may provide some
additional debugging steps:

It seems that the problem is *not* isolated to one website. I found a
list of
using Disqus and all of the ones I've tried have the same issue: I can't
see
the comments sections in Firefox but I can in Chrome. Here's just one
example:

http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/59469/back-iphone-computer/

I must have turned Disqus off *EVERYWHERE* within Firefox. Darned if I know
how THAT happened!

I cleared my cache and I cleared all cookies for the site (as opposed to
for all of Firefox) and it made no difference.

I started Firefox in Safe Mode as per one of the suggestions in the
above article and now I can see the Disqus portion of the page.

I think I've just proved that the issue is related to plugins/extensions.

I am using the free Avast 2017 product but this article depicts Avast
for 2014; the Avast GUI has been significantly redesigned at least once
since then and I can't see any comparable setting in today's Avast.

I've posted to the Avast forum and they tell me it is NOT an Avast
problem and to check with the Disqus forum or back here.

I've tried to contact support for Disqus but I can't get anywhere that
actually lets me post a question so that leaves here. What do I need to
do in Firefox? I assume it is the Avast Free Antivirus (or some other
Avast feature) but I see nothing in Avast that has anything to do with
Disqus.

I would replace Avast.

Okay, I've solved the problem myself. It *was* Avast that was the
problem. I clicked on the Avast icon in the upper right corner of the
page and saw that "Automatic blocking of trackers" was ENABLED.
(Facebook, Pinterest, Disqus were all blocked as well). I clicked on
"ENABLED" and it changed to DISABLED. (I then had an option to Block
each of the four social media entries individually.) I refreshed my page
and, voila, I got Disqus back.

I don't know how I blocked all the social media in the first place but
maybe it has something to do with my hypersensitive touchpad. It's not
unusual for it to mistake a hover for a click - and often the hover is
just me moving the cursor from A to B.

Anyway, my problem is resolved. That took several hours I'll never get
back....

Thanks to all who responded to this thread. You got me looking in the
right direction :-)

I have never enabled any Avast extension. In fact I disable all
extension automatically installed except the ones I purposely install.
Don't let third party applications manage your computer.

Using the most recent beta under W10, all I see is the normal problem with
Disqus and scripting. If I tell NoScript (4 times in sequence to account
for scripts withing scripts within...) the commenting section appears. That
is, in my experience, quite normal with this commenting platform which is
why I don't comment much.

I think that is the default when Avast's "Browser Shield" gets
installed. When I was using Avast, I would allow that extension to be
installed but I ended up reviewing the settings a few times. Note: if
you clear all cookies, this extension forgets its settings.

Avast's "Safe Price" extension, on the other hand, seemed more of a
bother than a benefit since I rarely do business over the web with
companies I have never heard of, which end up being the usual
recommendation of "Safe Price", so I deleted it.
