In my Frirefox profiles folder, I have 5 different profiles each with
the default extension. The latest is dated 11/20/09. The others bear
the date 10/28/09. I've no idea why that would be except that during
that period I was converting from the Win7 Release candidate to the
'real' version and probabaly made several attempts to do so.

How can I tell which profile is the active one and can I delete the
others safely?

Thank you.

Make a directory in the inbox area,
close TB and do a search for the name
of the dir you added, using *dirname*
as wildcard search name.
It will find the right one for you.

Thank you Sjouke. I tried that and it found the directory in the
Thunderbird profile. I am sorry I didn't make my question clear enough.
I was trying to fine the active Firefox profile. Is there a similar
technique for Firefox?

Yep!
With the FF config editor search for or add an innocent
string, and change it to a known content, like "ILIKETOFINDTHIS"
Make sure FF is closed, and do a search for a file containing that.
That should lead you to the right profile directory.
Dont forget to change the config string back to the original value.

Open profiles.ini in a text viewer. The profile you're using should
have "Default=1", and you can see the name of its folder.

Simplest way is to load Firefox with your current profile, then visit
several sites, then close Firefox. Find the profile with the newest
places.sqlite file, and delete other profiles. They will cause you no
problem, there, or not.

Thanks again. Found it.

Thank. That was almost too easy.

Thank you. That works too. Just proves there is more than one way to
skin whatever you want to :)
