Doesn't happen here.

Does it happen for all websites?

Thanks for your response.
It seems to start straight away on my home page (IE7 doesn't do it) and
then regularly from then on, irrespective of the page being viewed.
The CPU cycles up to 100% about once a minute and stays there about 10
seconds , even if I'm doing nothing.. It just seems to be looping round
and round.

Does it do it if you start Firefox to the safe-mode?

[Note Firefox 2.0.0.4 using 99% is in the subject but not in question]

Does it happen without a web page ( about:blank )
kind of hard to help you without a webpage. If it is possible to
help without a url, possibly check out the following:

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Problematic_extensions

http://kb.mozillazine.org/Standard_diagnostic_-_Firefox

Did you install a theme, if you did, disable it.
Test in Safe Mode -- those are things that would be covered
in Standard Diagnostic. Exactly when does the problem occur.
Please try the above before posting back.

Yes it does - and guess what - when I change pages, it reverts to
normal, so it seems to be the home page that's doing this? Sorry if I
mis-led you before. Incomplete problem solving on my part.

Melchert,
Thanks for your solution. I'm afraid I don't know enough about Firefox
yet to quite understand what a 'Prefbar Option' is. How do I kill
'flash' whatever that is.. ? I looked in Tools/Options and Firefox
Help and can't find anything about Prefbars or flash. Can you please
explain to a novice what you mean?

Thanks and regards,
Peter

Firefox can be extended in function by add-ons.
You can view and get extensions via Tools/Add-ons/Extensions, click on
'get extensions' (at the bottom left).

As Prefbar is unfortunately not available that way, I would advise you
the Flashblock extension:

So it doesn't seem that you really have a major problem after all.

I'm on Fiber so the 100% only lasts a few seconds and doesn't
really come back, AND I have "Adblock" extension installed.
Suggest you install "Adblock Plus" extension 229KB, and EasyList filter
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
http://adblockplus.org/en/ -- author's/maintainer's site
http://adblockplus.org/en/subscriptions -- EasyList filters

The actual filters invoked for your home page were these
and you should find them in your filter set.

*yming.com/a/*
*/ads/*
*adtmt.*

Under preferences, if it is like "Adblock" chose remove ads
rather than hide ads, so that they don't even get loaded.

Thanks both, for your help. Problem fixed and gone away!
I like Firefox even more now!
