Is there a character I can use in my searches that tells firefox NOT
to use my saved keywords?

For example, if I set up "php" as a keyword can I search something
like ">php tutorials" and have firefox search my default search engine
for "php tutorials" instead of searching the php keyword engine for
"tutorials"?

If this functionality isn't built in does anyone know of a way to add
something like this?

Yes, you have to edit a search engine to add that keyword, in the search
box go to "admin search engine"/"click over the search engine"/"edit
keyword".

After that, if you type "php tutorials" you going to search tutorials in
the search engine wich you add the keyword

Install "add to search bar" to add engines to specific sites,
"rightclick/add to searchbar"

the question is about searching from the location bar, and one of the advantages of keyword shortcuts is
not having a lot of search engines on the search bar. From the way the question was asked you could
just reverse to two keywords if tutorials is not a keyword for a bookmark. Keywords are not the same as
bookmark tags, there can only be one keyword assigned to a bookmark.

You might also be interested use of filetype:php using the filetype: keyword in Google.

Although the difference between an internal search from the location bar and and external search
from the location bar is by not hitting enter (or before hitting enter) for internal search, and
after hitting "enter" for an external search, I further avoid the problem asked by never allowing a
default search from the search bar instead using the keyword of "g:" for a google search, further
avoiding mistyped entries ending up as search arguments and unwanted did you mean xyz and
accompaning unwanted advertising from my ISP redirecting url errors.

A search for php tutorials on php might look like
g: filetype:php php tutorials

Also of interest for both external search and internal searches from the location bar
