Cause as I understand it, is Fx lacks FTP upload code, having only
download ability. Thus a helper application would be needed.

FireFTP works great.
I definitely recommend it.
Good, Luck.
Thanks for the info. As far as you know, is that the only way to enable
it, by using an extension?
So the extension is the only way to do it? Not too big a deal, but
usually there are ways to do things that don't require an extension, as
is often discussed here.

As an aside, FileZilla is an excellent FTP application, and nearly
idiot-proof. I would recommend it to anyone.
Is there some reason you're locked into using a browser for FTP? Why
not use an FTP stand-alone like LeechFTP? Yes, it's all nice and GUI.

I've used WS FTP forever. But a client of mine had some instructions to
clients for uploading to their FTP site I was checking out and mentioned
they could just drag and drop, but it didn't work for FF. For newbies,
it's much easier to have them use a browser IMO.
There is a trick hiding in the FireFTP knowledge base of how to launch FireFTP with a custom icon.
Unfortunately the window is not resizable nor maximizable, so I ditched the icon that launched FireFTP directly.

Gotcha. You're politically forced into the limitation. I see that all
the time in alt.www.webmaster.

And it's the underlying reason for people who only know how to use their
browser and perhaps their email program (if they're not stuck on the
webmail tit). :)

There is an extension specifically for putting a button on the toolbar
for it. I saw that when looking for Fire FTP.
Off-topic, but why do people still use FTP these days when there is SFTP
(which runs over SSH and is thus encrypted)?
(Followup-to mozilla.general.)

Yes, but current versions of FireFTP itself have had an optional toolbar icon. In fact, every version I have used since I discovered it. So no need to install that extra module.
I set up a shortcut to the FTP site in 'My Network Places' on Win XP and am
then able to access it from Firefox via File>Open File and going to the
shortcut in 'My Network Places' from there. It then allows drag and drop.
Don't know what other OSs this works with.
