I am using Firefox v. 16 with Windows 7 Professional (64-bit).

If I use Microsoft Internet Explorer (v. 9) and go to
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/download I see a button
for downloading Thunderbird v. 16.

If I go to the same page using Firefox (v. 16), there is no Download
button...

I do not have NoScript installed and my JavaScript is enabled. I have
the same problem when disabling all my add-on extensions.

What do the esperts suggest?

Two things: 1) you have CSS disabled, or 2) your User Agent string is
masked to something non-standard.

It's not really a button. It's merely detecting what OS you are using via
the UA string and displaying one of three <li> structures in a green-
colored <div>.

Test your User Agent string here:

1) View -> Page Style shows that Basic Page Style is selected. I am
guessing therefore (I am no expert!) that CSS is enabled.

2) I went to http://www.useragentstring.com/. This is what I got.
Again, I am no expert so why it is whowing v. 14.0.1 instead of v. 16.0
is a mistery to me!

It is most likely enabled. Many people play at enabling/disabling
JavaScript, but hardly anyone disables CSS.

You've posted a puzzlement! What is your User Agent string at *my* page,
http://tekrider.net/general/tektest.php

A search for the term "masking-agent" produces a link to this Add-On:
<https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/masking-agent/>

"Masking Agent protects you from showing platform information (OS and CPU)
on the internet."

Looks as if you need to disable *that* in order to test your UA. And the
download page you were having trouble with.

I use this one when I want to play with a site:
<http://chrispederick.com/work/user-agent-switcher/>

This is what I get from useragentstring.com when I ask to analyze your
page. I am not quite sure what an User Agent is, so I hope I am giving
you correct information.

PHP PHP
http://tekrider.net/general/tektest.php URL

Description: General-purpose scripting language

The User Agent is your browser.

Why are you asking something to analyze my page? There is nothing untoward
about it. It just shows you a few things about your setup, and it does not
save anything, nor report it to me. For example, it shows my UA as:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux i686; rv:16.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/16.0

Yes, PHP is a scripting language used, for the most part, in constructing
dynamic web pages.

I'd still like to see what my page reports as your UA string.

I don't remember, have you restarted your browser with all Add-ons
disabled yet? Help > Restart with Add-ons disabled

..and tried the download page again?

Okay, bear with me as I am not much of an expert in these things.
What exactly do I need to do in order to see what your page reports as
my UA string??

Yes, I have tried that.

Click on this link: <http://tekrider.net/general/tektest.php> , read the
page, and copy/paste the result shown for "User Agent string:". It will be
shown in red text.

We'll know after you post your current UA string.

Maybe that is why you don't see the button. Whatever "masking agent" is,
it is not identifying your platform to the Mozilla site.

"Masking Agent protects you from showing platform information (OS and
CPU) on the internet."

My UA is:

Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:16.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/16.0

My suggestion would be to use Help > Troubleshooting Information > Reset
Firefox.

So your "masking agent" is still active, even after we asked you to
disable it before re-trying the Thunderbird download page. Once again,
disable that. The Thunderbird page *needs* to read your operating system
before it offers download buttons.

As I'd already mentioned, when I 'mask' as something without an OS showing
in the UA string, say like this one I made up:

Mozilla/5.0 (I-Am-Robot; i686; rv:31.0) Robot/20120101

..there are *no download links*. When I change it back to the standard
Firefox UA string, the button and links are present in the page, and
willingly offer me the download.

Actually I had set Masking Agent to Disable status. I have now REMOVED
it and restarted Firefox, but the result is the same:

Mozilla/5.0 (masking-agent; rv:14.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/14.0.1

I have no idea where this "masking-agent; rv:14.0" comes from.

Neither do I, but until you figure out how to remove it, that download
page isn't going to work. Maybe someone familiar with that add-on will see
this thread and offer some suggestions.

At least you know what the problem is... and it isn't Firefox. :-)

I did some research on this UA issue and found this:
http://www.howtogeek.com/114937/htg-explains-whats-a-browser-user-agent/

I reset the general.useragent.override [it had a string that read
"Mozilla/5.0 (masking-agent;rv:14.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/14.0.1"].

This is what I get now when I go to
http://tekrider.net/general/tektest.php:

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; rv:16.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/16.0

UNFORTUNATELY, when I go to
http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/download, I still cannot see
the Download button!

I solved the problem...

I went into about:config and did a search for the word "masking".

I had four hits:
* estensions....@basa.nl.install-event-fired
user set boolean true
* general.appversion.override user set string 5.0(masking-agent)
* general.oscpu.override user set string masking-agent
* general.platform.override user set string masking-agent

I reset all four of them and the Download button for Thunderbird is now
visible again!

<applause>

Now, I'll ask the obvious. If those get installed to about:config when
the extension is installed. Why aren't they removed when the extension
is removed? They should have at least been changed when the extension
was disabled. No?

A question for extension authors.

Thanks, Walt.
Yours is a good question. And there is no telling what other debris
are hiding in my config file from add-on extensions that I have since
removed!

Congratulations. Glad you figured out how to remove it.

Exactly. This has been the issue with many extensions who do bad
housekeeping. I found in my prefs.js files leftovers of add-ons that I
had used 5-6 years ago.

Well, it gives rise to possibility of a new add-on, that will read the
list of existing installed add-ons, and will remove all traces of all
other add-ons from prefs.js and other disk files.

Any developer interested? :-)

Though I guess, that firefox "reset" should do this automatically -
when it is removing all add-ons, it should remove traces of all
add-ons from disk files also.

Thanks.

I haven't tested the firefox 'Reset' function, but I believe that was
part of the plan for it. Basically, is makes a new default prefs.js
file with default values, and then moves the password and bookmarks from
the old profile into the new one.

Rawat, I've told you before that this really isn't the place to voice
opinions about development. That's what the "Submit Feedback" item in
the Help menu is for. If you'd like to get into an actual discussion
about Firefox development, that's what the mozilla.dev.apps.firefox
newsgroup is for.

I've found one thing that sometimes helps in somewhat similar cases:

Make sure that, after such a change, you shut down Thunderbird and
restart it. If this doesn't help the first time, try it once more
before deciding that it doesn't work.
