I did not install any new addon before this problem started.
The problems persist even after restarting FF. But in Safe Mode it runs OK.
How can this problem be corrected?

The problem was corrected when restarting in normal mode after starting
in Safe Mode. Very peculiar. -emf

I've had exactly the same problem, with the same solution, but I have
no idea what causes it.

I was too fast to be happy. I restarted FF(3.5.6) and on the address bar
it says "Search Bookmarks and History" while the homepage did not load.
But then I clicked a link and it loaded and showed on the address bar
too. There _is_ something wrong with the address bar.

Yes. Not displaying the home page or its address on starting FF is 1 or
the symptoms when the address bar malfunctions.
The main annoyance is that you cannot write an address in the bar and
click to get there. You have to google it (the search is working), find
the url there and click the link.
I'm sure you already cleared your history and cache, etc.
Try about:config search on /urlbar/ and make sure they are all default,
in case some add-on changed something.

Clearing the history and the cache did not affect the behavior. What
else to clear?

They were all default.
What I found out is that when for example I have a couple of tabs open
and restart FF, it may restart with nothing in the address bar and
displaying no page. Then when I restart it again a second time, it may
well restart normally with the 2 tabs that were open initially. Does it
make any sense?
I have started disabling 1 by 1 the extensions just in case 1 of them is
responsible.
I didn't test it out to see if it could be the cause for what you describe,
but were you playing around with Private Browsing Ctrl+Shift+P
because used normally without shutting down. When you close your
private browsing session you would be back into your normal session
with windows that you had before entering private session and windows
you create there.
I did not know about Private Browsing. It's behavior does resemble what
I've been experiencing. But the problem is intermittent, it comes and
goes. And every time it reappears I enable the disabled extension and
disable a new one. I am wondering whether redownloading FF might correct
the problem.

I do have AVG Safe Search, and since it's at the top of the list it was
the first to be disabled, but the problem continued so it was reenabled.
Since I reached and disabled the Freecorder toolbar I haven't had the
problem again. Since I do not use it very often, I have left it
disabled. At some time in the future I will try to enable it again to
see if the problem reappears.
I reenabled the Freecorder toolbar, and the problem has not reappeared
so far.
