What are you attempting to kill in the browser? Are you confusing
Firefox with Thunderbird?

I see you are a Google Groups user; are you trying to kill other GGers?
Be aware that many of us kill all GGers in our newsreaders.

That said, a few seconds at Google (the search engine) found:
http://www.penney.org/ggkiller.html

Has anyone ever recommended you dump Google Groups and get a real
newsreader and NNTP service?

But the momentum appears to be more towards web forums than NNTP. MS
didn't even set up a group for Windows 7 on msnews, and many support
groups now can only be found that way.

I personally dislike them immensely and prefer using a newsreader...

Kill as many as you like. They will pop up again...if they are so

Only if they are white-listed in my killfile. The strategy outlined at
the improve-usenet pages defines how to kill *all* *except* the few IDs
one explicitly allows.

You ended up on my white-list when you participated in (or started) some
thread elsewhere a while ago. I saw a reply to you and specifically
added you to the (short) list.

> Google Groups suits me. My choice.

Of course it is your choice, no question. Just so you realize that mass
killfiling of GG posts occurs due to the zillions of spammers that
Google allows to run rampant through their cheesy interface.

Bitter? No, not at all. I'm sure there are millions of us (TINU) using
Usenet who do not wish to be inundated with spam posts in the quantity
that Google Groups allows. I frequently see posts in various Usenet
groups asking how to get rid of all of it.

A few years ago, an "entrepreneur" published a program to automate
spamming Usenet through Google Groups. May he be infested with the fleas
of a thousand camels.

Better, may his internet access only work on the 5th Tuesday in
February. However, if you want to killfile someone, then an
email/newsreader client is the way to go, and avoiding GG will do the
job quite well. After a few looks at it, I concluded only a programmer
could like the interface.

Well, on the other hand users of Google groups don't see
the vast majority of this spam as it is filtered from its own
web reader pages. It's to bad that so many people dump
on Google because of it. A lot of casual posters with
good information on topic use Google groups, and killing it
entirely is like tossing out the baby with the bathwater.

Just my 2 cents for sandy58, I'm guessing Bearegard

That will work too, but I'd still like to see him deal with the fleas.

Refresh me: does Tb3 allow killing by general Message-ID? And overriding
for a select few? Such as:

!markread Message-ID googlegroups.com

If the bathwater is sufficiently toxic, tossing out the baby may be the
only solution that works.

That is true, but their volume of posts far under-exceeds the volume
that the spammers exude into our newsreaders. This is where the better
newsreaders' ability to white-list comes in handy. There are quite a few
worthy GG posters in my list.

I don't know if this is what the OP is after, but there's
<http://www.penney.org/ggkiller.html>, a killfile for reading Google
Groups with Fx. Google's interface changes, and the script has to be
reworked sometimes. I don't know if the current version works -- it's
dated 2008.

I use "mark unread" instead of "delete", and so can fish the baby out
of the bath. Usually don't bother except on alt.sewing, though; there
aren't a lot of babies in that sewage.

In the NNTP reader portion of TB, 'delete' only removes the message from
the header pane list, it does NOT try to delete the message from the
server (which wouldn't work anyway). Perhaps a better word than
'delete' could be found.

I'd agree that a better word than "delete" could be used ...
"RemoveFromAccess" ... "PermanentlyHide" ... but the unwashed masses
might not be able to figure out what it meant. :-)

I use "markread" for most, and only use "delete" for the major kooks.

I realize I should have added ....off the server .. better
clarification. And for those that may argue this point, when you
delete/cancel your own post it's removed ONLY from your view but remains
on the server for everyone else to see.

That completely depends on the server. In the cnews server, I told
someone that "most" servers usually don't allow it. But the poster
deleted a post to the server using info here:
http://www.livinginternet.com/u/ua_cancel.htm

I haven't tried it here, but seeing how quickly data gets thrown all
over many different servers now, it may not appear to work completely.

IF a server accepts cancels from users (most don't for obvious reasons),
and IF you catch it before it is propagated to other servers which DON'T
allow user cancels, then you MIGHT be lucky enough to cancel a post.
However, that is rather like saying if you drive 90 through a red light,
you might survive. Best not to depend on it.

No that feature hasn't worked since the days of Communicator 4.x series.
It comes up. But does nothing. Because Mozilla don't use their own news
server anymore it a collaboration of Google Groups and Giganews and
before then it stopped after going to the Mozilla application. besides
the way the net is now. Unless you do it within ten seconds of doing the
errant post. it all over the world anyway.

Well, it still works fine, depending on the server you are opn. Some
allow Cancel requests, some don't. Secnew did, news.mozilla.org does not.

It was effective in closed groups, such as secnews, since the posts were
not propagated to Usenet. technically, these are not either, but with
Google Groups, the mailing list option, and the unofficial mirroring
done by some news servers and web forums, it would not be very
effective. Even if the Cancel request were honored, mailing list
subscribers, Google Groupers, would still see the posts, only newsgroup
users would not, leading to more confusion then ever.

All the option does here is to remove the post from your own view,
everyone else sees it.

I didn't expand my reply to include the server configurations.

If the server is configured to not allow cancels then there is no such
app that I am aware of that can override it. The server you mentioned
probably IS configured to allow cancels or is not configured properly if
it is if a 3rd party app can cancel posts that are not yours.
