Google calculator appears to have stopped working in FF, although it
still works in IE.

Am I missing something?

It works for me in FF15 beta. Try it in troubleshooting mode, and just
what did you enter that it didn't work right?

Does not work for me (with 14.0) nor does it work if I mask the UA to IE 8.

> Used to work in the past. Odd, isn't it?

Other things that used to work no longer do, such as:

convert 13 kilometers to miles

The answer shows in the JavaScript dropdown, but when Enter is pressed, it
is not in the web page of results. I'd say it's Google's fault and not
Firefox.

But the Google Calculator works for me in IE, as I said earlier.

In fact, IE doesn't just show the calculation result, it even brings up
an on-screen calculator pad!

See screenshot at <https://dl.dropbox.com/u/15973585/Google_calc_IE.png>.

Something is clearly wrong in FF.

I still say something is clearly wrong at Google. I'd bet it's their
browser sniffing gone awry. Happens often 'round the web.

BTW, it does not work in the latest Opera either. (There's a clue!)

No problem for me with this Google Calculator in Firefox 14, 15, 16 or
17, clicking on the numbers and functions, or using my keyboards
numerical keypad.

No problem with the calculator that appears when doing a Google Search
(your screenshot) when clicking on the numbers and functions.

Thanks for your reply, but the link you sent isn't the Google calculator.

With the Google calculator you simply type the formula into the Google
search bar, and Google is supposed to show the result.

This used to work in FF, and it still works for me in IE, but it no
longer works for me in FF.

Yes!
You're in the UK. I'm in the USA. :)

There are differences depending on which google server you happen to get,
especially in different countries. To experiment with this you would have to
fake your IP because it will only let you enter a location in the same
country as your IP indicates.

I tried various combinations of W7/XP Pro/XP Home with IE6/IE8/IE9,
FF13.0.1/FF14.0.1, Google Chrome 19.0 portable, and Opera 11.62 portable.
The only one which gives the "traditional" google calculator result is IE6:
http://i47.tinypic.com/671btj.png

All the others give:
http://i47.tinypic.com/209j4ah.png

So it looks like the latter is the new "standard" look for the google
calculator (at least in the USA), presumably caused by the javascripts.
Google monkeys around with their javascript code constantly. If you turn off
javascript, the calculator doesn't work at all (doesn't appear).

In Firefox 14.0.1 I typed 4 * 2 into the google search window and the
auto complete in Google brought up the google calculator.

OK now I am frustrated. On some math functions + and - it brings up the
calendar. On other * it does not. / some times does and some time does not

I think Google is having a bad day, and it is not the fault of any browser

That's a nice calculator! Due to imperfect vision, in Windows XP, for
both text and 3D objects I have set white on dark background colors, and
the red letters on the keys of the Windows Calculator are not easily
distinguishable, so I've been looking for a calculator that uses the
system colors. The problem now is to save the webpage so I can use it
when not connected, and then edit it to remove extraneous elements,
something that, after having a look at the code, does not seem too easy.

Have you tried it in google.com but not google.co.uk?
Also you need to enable javascript for google.co.uk in order to show
the new calculator, which .co.uk is using. The old one does not need
javascript (you can try it at .com.hk which still use the old one).

Well DUH. Isn't that what we were asking? It didn't stop working, the
user STOPPED it from working. FF didn't stop it, the USER did. I would
think that it would be pretty clear that this was a javascript function.
But I would call that 'problem solved'.

I've been following this thread for a while! Have you by any chance tried
clearing your browser cache. I say this because the image you show for the
result for unit conversion is *not* the same style as now appears when you
do a unit conversion. I presume Google has updated the scripting and maybe
you are still picking up old version of the script from your cache...

I do not know if you've already tried it, but the first thing I would
try in a such a case would be to empty the browser's cache. Somehow,
sometimes material in the cache affects webpages.

Now that you have made that decision a suggestion of a different kind?

You are using Windows 7

On your keyboard press one of the 'Windows Keys' when the Start Menu
opens start typing the word calculator . As you type Windows
will start searching. Probably before you get to the second 'c' in
calculator Windows will have found the built-in calculator program and
it will be highlighted. Press enter. The calculator program will open.

The 'View' button at the top-left lets you select several different
types of calculators as well a some functions. And you don't have to be
online to use it. :-)

Thanks - yes, I'm aware of the Windows calculator. Unfortunately it
doesn't offer copy & paste for some reason.

Ooops - I got confused by the fact that the content of the result box
isn't selectable with the mouse :-[

Thanks for your patience.

So you are the only one with this problem.
I typed in the google search bar: 3*4
... then i hit the "Return" key and the
Screen showed :
"Search About 25,270,000,000 results (0.34 seconds)"
followed by the calculator came in first position
followed by a lot of site links (the first link is:

/3///4/ - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Thanks for your reply.

I think I few other respondends indicated that it doesn't work for them
either, so I'm not the only one (although apparently a member of a small
minority :-) )

Not completely, it just skips loading of the extensions and personas,
and themes, but still uses the same prefs.js file, which may be where
the problem is. I a new test profile is pretty easy to do.

Have you tried the following ?
/"Calculator/ can be /shown/ by just typing /calculator/ in /Google/
search bar."

Thank you for your patience.

The plot thickens. I just realised that I don't have to create a new
profile for testing purposes, in view of the fact that I have an unused
'virgin' default profile. Sure enough, the Google calculator works OK
with the default profile!

It then occurred to me that the Google Enhancer add-on may somehow be
related to the problem, and sure enough, if I temporarily disable Google
Enhancer in my profile, the Google calculator works OK!

The question is why doesn't it work in Safe Mode, which is supposed to
temporarily disable all add-ons!?

Any other Google Enhancer users here who can confirm the erratic behaviour?

I'm aware that there is a forum at
<http://nc.ddns.us/forum/viewforum.php?id=1> where I can try and follow
this up.

Thanks, but doesn't work (i.e. it only brings up calculator-related
search hits).

Remove the s from https, hit enter. If you don't get redirected to
https again, try the calculator.

For me, it works without encryption and fails with encryption.

There's a lot of noise in this thread, and I think it could be a lot
more helpful and focused if you provided more details about your setup.
Go to Help-->Troubleshooting_Information, then click [Copy all to
Clipboard]. Open a reply to this post, and go to Edit-->Paste to paste
the info from your Troubleshooting Information page.

Sorry about the noise (I seem to remember that snipping was frowned upon
here, no? :-\ )

See below for the output you asked for, although in the meantime Google
Enhance appears to have emerged as the culprit (see earlier response),
but I'm still mystified by the fact that Google Enhance doesn't appear
to have been disabled by Safe Mode.

Looking at the diagnostic information, I can't help wondering whether
all this printer-related 'noise' is really necessary???

Thank you.

You already said that. For me and for Herb, it doesn't work with
https, however. We're not trying to solve a problem that you don't
have, but rather one that Herb does have. If the problem is restricted
to https for Herb as it is for me, that may be useful information.

> NOT the answer.

If you want to help Herb along what you think is the right track, feel
free, but I'd appreciate you not trying to derail this branch of the
thread by announcing that it won't help.

That was on the old secnews. Feel free to snip away here... up until the
snip police chime in if you snip too much. *g*

It may not be, but it looks really impressive to the casual observer!

Interesting that something that is supposed to enhance Google gets in
the way of a Google feature...
So, the question is, does everyone who seems to have the problem have
Google Enhance?
As for why it may still cause trouble in 'safe mode', it may change a
pref in the prefs.js file.

Ok, spend you time on a red herring. It's your time. I believe he has
already found the cause.

All the printer information is probably not pertinent unless the user is
troubleshooting a printing problem....

Indeed, which is why, in an earlier post, I asked:

Any other Google Enhancer users here who can confirm the erratic behaviour?

Mmmm, so Safe Mode may not be quite as safe as the name implies? =-O

Well, it doesn't create a new, temporary, default profile. Maybe it
should. Reset Firefox, however, DOES, and should be considered a more
drastic solution.

Yes, thanks - too drastic for me on this occasion, not least in view of
the fact that the culprit has now been identified.

You may test your problem by creating a new profile, then use it. So you
will see if using a new clean profile will permit you to see the google
calculator.
You then can switch the profile to your previous one if you prefer.
It could be that your problem is caused by a corrupted profile.
Anyway, tell us if it's ok with a new, fresh, clean profile.

First of all, you don't need to test; you've already solved your
problem by disabling an extension.

If Google itself is redirecting you, I think there are tricks to get
around that, but I don't know them. Other people here do, in case you
want to pursue this.

If the redirecting is happening on your end, it's probably due to an
extension. I use one called HTTPS Everywhere,
<https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere>.
