Error message on the xterm, from which I started it in safe-mode:

=======================
undefined
info: This browser does not allow you to watch this video. Try to update
your browser or use a different browser.
=======================

I'm running FF 57.0.4/64-bit/linux. Safe-mode made no difference.
There are LOTS of videos that FF won't play under any circumstances, but
which Chrome (which I hate) has no problems with. User Agent Switcher
doesn't help.

Chrome plays the thing fine.

Is the following error-message sequence relevant? The Part from ### on
was repeated many times.

bb:/stuff/FF57/firefox>./firefox -safe-mode
[Parent 4646, Gecko_IOThread] WARNING: pipe error (113): Connection
reset by peer: file
/builds/worker/workspace/build/src/ipc/chromium/src/chrome/common/ipc_channel_posix.cc,
line 353
IPDL protocol error: Handler returned error code!

###!!! [Parent][DispatchAsyncMessage] Error:
PLayerTransaction::Msg_ReleaseLayer Processing error: message was
deserialized, but the handler returned false (indicating failure)

IPDL protocol error: Handler returned error code!

Sorry, that error message was on the CNN video entry, not the exterm;
the xterm error message is given below. Mea culpa estupida.

I've just got adblock plus (also in chrome). uBlock Origin is off.
Nothing about theoplayer in my /etc/hosts file and I don't block
javascript. I've tried a variety of html5/flash video player extensions
over the last couple of years, but nothing seems to work for facebook
except Chrome. The facebook videos are especially nasty, because there
used to be a way to view them by opening a new tab, but that got killed
a few weeks ago.

I looked at the theoplayer website. It seems to say that EVERYBODY can
see theoplayer streams. Yeah, right.

Work in a test profile?

57.n.n and 52.n.n. virgins. I couldn't find the thing that tells you
exactly which version you're using. How can people live with UIs like
these?

Nope. Tried 8 facebook videos and the CNN mudslide one. The facebook
videos simply didn't start. The CNN video threw up the same error.
Random youtube videos worked fine.

Sounds more like a computer than a Firefox problem.

It runs here on my Firefox 57.04, Windows 10 but the web console does
show script issues on the page, several failed attempts before it
actually worked. My AV, Kaspersky didn't like it either and flagged a
content security warning - Content Security Policy: The page's settings
blocked the loading of a resource at
data:application/javascript;base64,KGZ1b... ("script-src 'unsafe-eval'
'unsafe-inline' http://edition.cnn.com *
http://ff.kis.v2.scr.kaspersky-labs.com
ws://ff.kis.v2.scr.kaspersky-labs.com").

Try launching Firefox from the Run command with the -p switch (space
before the hyphen) and create a new profile. Then try the page/video
again. If it still isn't working, clear the cache and cookies, restart
Firefox and temporarily disable your AV before trying again.

Without knowing what to look for, I'm lost. Lots of video stuff, maybe
100 codecs listed in about:config -- the only place I could find the
entire list.

> Sounds more like a computer than a Firefox problem.

Possibly, but I've been using this computer since 2011 (top-of-line at
the time with plenty of memory) with Firefox 6. Videos used to run with
no problems, but as I updated FF more and more things were lost. Not
sure when video problems started, but within the last two years, growing
worse when I upgraded from FF fortysomething to 52. At some point 52
got worser, with 57 playing some videos that 52 wouldn't. Now neither
will play ANY facebook video even when I had installed various
html5/flash extensions that claimed to deal with facebook videos.

SOMETHING is wrong, but the fact that Chrome works fine would seem to
indicate a software rather than a hardware problem. As previously noted,
the problem exists in new virgin profiles as well as safe mode. I
haven't added anything to /etc/hosts since April 2017, but problems
existed before that.

If nobody has an "AHA! I know exactly what's wrong!" solution, I suspect
it isn't worth spending time on. A lot of stuff doesn't work right with
slackware, most of which my live-in consultant is NOT interested in
dealing with. He LIKES Chrome :-(
