Page loading twice

Pages loading twice seem to be on the rise.

After clicking on a link the page loads, then loads again. The Back
button (on first click) returns the page to "itself", then the second
click returns to the page on which the link was activated.

This seems to be happening with increasing frequency (an impression,
have not kept stats). Has anyone else experienced the same thing?

I don't see the connection. If it were the mouse it ought to have the
same effect on all pages. The double page loading is intermittent. For
example:

First load http://www.washingtonpost.com/

Click on "Kaine, Allen..." link. After it stops loading (green "in
process" icon stops and disappears), click the Back button. No change.
Same page. Click Back button again, it will return to the home page.

Now go to http://www.nationalreview.com/

Click on "Elusive Undecideds". Click the Back button, returns to home
page on first click.

I can go back and forth between those two sites and it will behave the same.

Unless you are suggesting that my mouse knows where it is and is just
busting my chops.

Both those sites work exactly the same for me. On the Washington Post
page, I can get back to the home page on the first click of the "return"
arrow from the Paine, Allen link. Same for the National Review.

I tried Google, Safari, Opera, and IE, none of which reproduced what I
describe. I opened FF History, and it does not show any duplication.

However (and this is after closing FF, flushing the cache, and going to
washingtonpost.com), when I go through the above described sequence to
load a page from the home page, then right click the Back button, there
are two instances of the page I just loaded, and I can toggle back and
forth by selecting each one (which is the same page) with the mouse.

This is not a Firefox problem.

I see the same thing with my 15.0.1 with JavaScript enabled (but *not*
when JavaScript is disabled). If you right-click on the Back Button, you
will see two instances of the page, but with different icons.

You need to contact the Post and tell their webmaster of this problem
(maybe it's intentional?).
Different site works differently, and not suitable for a comparison. It is
not an "intermittent problem" but a "site problem" and just one site.

Thank you. The part that puzzles me is that FF is the only browser
(tested, Google, IE, Opera and Safari) that displays the behavior. If
the root problem is the site, why does it not show up on all browsers?

I assume you tried it in safe mode.

I tested the Post page in Firefox, Opera, Chromium, and IceCat. Only
Firefox had the double-page problem. IceCat crashed on the main page,
locking up the browser. The other two seemed to work normally.

All browsers are required to display error-free code in the same manner.
However, each is entitled to its own method of handling errors. Firefox is
less tolerant of errors than the others.

In checking that "Allen, Kaine" page, here's the result:

The HTML:
2Fwww.washingtonpost.com%2Flocal%2Fdc-politics%2Fallen-kaine-square-off-in-
senate-debate%2F2012%2F09%2F20%2Fdf6be318-0313-11e2-8102-
ebee9c66e190_story.html%3Fhpid%3Dz2>
"Errors found while checking this document as XHTML 1.0 Transitional!
Result: 530 Errors, 721 warning(s)"

The CSS:
profile=css21&warning=0&uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.washingtonpost.com%2Flocal%
2Fdc-politics%2Fallen-kaine-square-off-in-senate-debate%2F2012%2F09%2F20%
2Fdf6be318-0313-11e2-8102-ebee9c66e190_story.html%3Fhpid%3Dz2>
"Sorry! We found the following errors (329)"

There may be a way to test the *12,063 lines* of JavaScript but I don't
know of one.

Figure over a thousand errors on one page. That's terrible for a
mainstream site!

By contrast, your National Review main page has over 1,600 errors. <shrug>

Now, you know what assume gets you <g>!!

(Using 15.0.1.)

Good suggestion. Started in Safemode, loaded washingtonpost.com, clicked
on link. Right click on Back button showed one instance of page. Left
clicked Back button, returned to home page.

Closed FF, started again in Safemode. This time right clicking the Back
button did show two instances of the page. Left click on Back button
"returned" to the same page. Second left click on Back button returned
to home page.

Repeated a third time (close, restart in Safemode) and the result is the
same as the second one above.

because other browsers may be more permissive to a terribly
faulty website?
Particularly IE is well renowned for its tolerance against the
errors MS' own web-editor mock-up "Frontpage" produces.

I didn't have that problem when I tested it. Here's a screencast:
<http://ilias.ca/screencasts/fx-washingtonpost-back.webm>

Am I not replicating it correctly?

We'll need some more info about your Firefox setup. Go to
Help-->Troubleshooting_Information, then click [Copy all to Clipboard].
Open a reply to this post, and go to Edit-->Paste to paste the info from
your Troubleshooting Information page.

Try setting browser.cache.disk.enable to true.

Will do, and will report back. Thank you, Chris, much appreciated.

I am running Firefox ESR 10.0.7 (the latest version) under eComStation
2.1. Firefox will not open files or websites with *.aspx extension. I
have to rename the extension to HTM or HTML then it works. Oddly, this
happens only under the "REAL UA". If I emulate other interfaces the files
with ASPX extension will load. Could someone point me to a site or file
where I can find instruction how to fix this problem.

Regards,
Zoltan

I don't know enough to know if that's your problem or not but mice can
be intermittent. I"m sure of that. I have a Dell laer mouse a couple
years old that every 100th click or so, the cursor goes to the edge of
the screen. I have another mouse, 4 other new mice, but I want to
see how this one progresses as it gets older.

I can see how that might be. But in this case, moving back and forth
between two sites, the observed behavior only happened on one site,
every time. For that to happen, the mouse would have to malfunction
every other time on a regular, consistent basis.

That's the pref that makes it work here. How about setting
browser.cache.memory.enable to to true?

If that doesn't work, try resetting Firefox:

Setting browser.cache.memory.enable to to true brought no joy but the
reset did. Thank you, Chris. I'll keep a shorthand log as I go through
returning preferences to my preferences and try to isolate what caused it.

Many thanks again, Chris.
