I could filter by date for some older stuff, but that is not what I
want. I need to be able to quickly and efficiently search all of
usenet (that is indexed by Google, and not just one tree at a time,
like alt.*) and only usenet.
I ask here because I found a similar thread from 2008 in which people
here were helpful, and some information was provided. Unfortunately,
the 2008 thread no longer helps me now that too much non-usenet
content is indexed by Google Groups.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
Google Groups has basically usurped UseNet and groups such as mozilla.org
and microsoft.com as if they are part of Google, so I don't know what you
expect to get or not to get. About all I can do is try to keep webforums out of
searches.
See http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/firefox/search.htm
then see if gg:ff as a keyword works for you, it is to limit searches
to Firefox newsgroups. If you don't want to limit to Firefox newsgroups
try the gg: as a Firefox keyword shortcut,. If you don't know what a
keyword shortcut is see http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/firefox/search.htm
You can create your own keyword shortcuts, or search engines starting
from http://groups.google.com
or from http://groups.google.com/advanced_search?q=&
No, that doesn't help, but thanks.
If no one else knows how to search all of Google's usenet archive and
only usenet, perhaps someone could point me to a place where I can get
an answer? I was pointed here from the Google Groups help forum.

It is odd that they should send you here. What search capabilities
there are, is a function of Google Groups and not a function of Firefox.
You might try asking in the Usenet newsgroup comp.internet.services.google.
OTOH if the Google Groups help forum could not help you then
comp.internet.services.google might not be able to help either.

I expect the problem is with what Bill considers the usenet. It is hard
to have a conversation without a clear definition of what is wanted.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet
Does he want to include or exclude this newsgroup which is
actually a newsgroup under the control of Mozilla (though from
Google you might think Google controlled it) and not part of usenet.
Or include/exclude things that are not even in the format of usenet newsgroups
such as web forums, blogs.

While newsgroups like mozilla.support.firefox are strictly not part of Usenet,
I do not think that the main problem is with what Bill considers to be Usenet.
Google Groups has a whole bunch of web forums which are available only via
Google's HTTP interface using a web browser. Google's own web forums are
not available via NNTP, unlike this here newsgroup mozilla.support.firefox.
Bill wants to know how to exclude those web forums from a Google Groups
search. It is a secondary question whether Bill wants to exclude groups
like mozilla.support.firefox which are strictly not Usenet but which are
nevertheless made available, via NNTP, from news servers outside of Google.

Is <http://groups.google.com/advanced_search?hl=en> what you are
looking for?

Nah-ah. I'm staying out of this. ... Now, here's my opinion.
Please followup in the newsgroup.

(not forgetting the all-important "or [ ] Google Groups" radio button).

Fractal Music and Images: http://www.pboulding.co.uk/ and

Even with that button clicked, I'm getting hits from non-usenet
groups, which is what I'm trying to avoid.

I usually search within/specifying a specific group and that has
worked for me with results from just that group, not searching
the complete google-groups archive like you want to, but testing
i don't see any results from outside 'groups.google.com'.
How about if using a regular web-searchengine and including
something like 'site:groups.google.com'?
Or did i misunderstand you? You write "getting hits from
non-Usenet groups". "Groups"? Do you mean you want to exclude
some news-groups google publicly archives that you don't consider
part of Usenet? I don't have any suggestions on how to do that,
if that's the case.

Addendum: If the Big 8 part of Usenet suffice, you should be able
to do it by repeating each search eight times specifying one
hierarchy (alt.*, comp.*, misc.*, news.*, rec.*, sci.*, soc.*,
talk.*) on the 'Group (Return only messages from the group at
this location)'-line. Perhaps they can even be combined them into
a single search-line ( something like 'group:(x or y or z)'? ),
but i don't know the proper delimiters for that.
