Not nice changinging the format of these files and then not reformatting these files when you
upgrade to version 3. I really need to find a utility that will reformat the formhistory.dat file.

I'm not sure what you mean by "then not reformatting these files".
Firefox 3 uses different files for form history and browsing history.
The information from the old files is imported to newly created files
(formhistory.sqlite and places.sqlite).

I think I got it working.
I deleted version 3, firefox directory, install version 2.0.0.14 & updated to version 3.
On a quick glance I saw that the form data was not sorted
