There is a tiny icon appearing next to the addressbar url of a site, and
also on the tab of a site. It is favicon.ico that is in the home folder
of a site.

How can I download this tiny image for any site, in ff3?

Thanks.

Usually you can just enter http://example.com/favicon.ico into the URL
window and download the favicon just like any other file. When it
displays in your browser, just save it like you would any other image.
Generally, favicons are in the root directory of the web site, but
sometimes they are in another folder somewhere, in that case you will
get a "file not found" error, and you will have to view the source and
find the favicon tag (<link rel="SHORTCUT ICON"
href="somepath/favicon.ico">) and enter the path to download the icon.
But it's not nice to steal people's icons.

The cache viewer extension makes this easy.
Go to site ...
open cache viewer from Tools
locate downloaded favicon.ico file.
Copy.
Paste.

In addition to the other answers, I think the easiest way is to go to
the |Tools| menu and select |Page Info|. In the Page Info window, select
the "Media" panel. There should be an entry for the favicon, as well as
a [Save As] button.

That doesn't work for xhtnl or when the server sets the favicon.
The html has to explicitly declare a favicon for Tools/Page Info to
work.

Nice thing about the cache is that if it shows in the browser it
is going to be in the cache.

examples where Tools/Page Info doesn't show the displayed favicon:

Yup. That was the easiest and does it.

Thanks.

Indeed. Puck page wasn't showing favicon.ico in Page Info.

Using cacheviewer and searching for favicon.ico brings list of all
favicons that can be saved by right click.

Thanks.

If the favicon is in the root directory (home folder) of the site you
can download it by entering http://WEB SITE URL/favicon.ico. Where "WEB
SITE URL" is the site's domain name. While favicons are "generally" in
the home folder and that is where they SHOULD be, that is not always the
case.

Right-clicking the content page and selecting "Page Info" and then
selecting the Media tab should display a list of media content being
served by the page. If you scroll down and find the favicon, simple
click the "Save As..." button to save it.

Caveat: The favicon may not be named "favicon.ico" or even exist, this
is controlled by the web page owner.

Any particular reason you're re-posting a query from over 5 years ago,
without adding anything?

This has been happening in several groups over the past couple of
months, no-new-text replies to months-old or years-old posts, from
gmail addresses without names attached. I suspect it's a bot messing
with Google Groups, maybe testing a spambot, but I dunno. Maybe Google
have finally made their Groups interface so confusing that people
occasionally do this by accident.

I would use the WGET utility, as in:

wget www.swiftys.org.uk/favicon.ico

But beware; the favicon doesn't have to be in the root:

<head>
<link rel="icon" type="image/x-icon" href="/icons/swiftys.fav">
</head>

... so my favicon could be coming from:
http://www.swiftys.org.uk/icons/swiftys.fav

I used this technique to give distinct favicons to different parts of my
site.

And I may not have the "type=" value right; I was relying in my memory,
never a good choice.
