Where does Firefox store what IE used to call Temporary Internet Files

I'm running Firefox 2.0.0.16 on a new PC running Windows XP
professional-64. On my previous PC I used to be able to play a
streaming .mp3 music file from a particular Internet radio station on
either IE or FF and once it loaded completely, I was able to go to
temporary internet files and copy the complete .mp3 file to a
different folder to have a permanent copy of the 2-hour show.

With my new PC I'm unable to locate a cache folder or temporary
internet folder containing the 21,060KB file anywhere.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Under XP, it's stored under:
C:\Documents and Settings\{your login username}\Local Settings
\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\{your FF profile name}
\Cache

You can Google Firefox cache to understand more about it. There is a
way to find it via about:cache. Trying to explain it in 10 words or
less is a bit more of a challenge. Short and sweet is FF assigns its
own names to the temp files (so not descriptive like IE). Smaller
cached files are cached within the _CACHE_ files themselves whereas
larger ones (such as a video) is cached to its own file.

Thanks JB!

That gave me all the help I needed...except that the .mp3 files didn't
actually show up in the disk cache.

It's very puzzling. On my old system, even though I was using FF, the
files showed up in IE's temporary internet files folder. On this new
computer, even directing the system to show hidden files, that folder
doesn't show up. However if I open IE and go to browsing history> view
files, the temporary internet files folder shows up and the files are
there, which I can then copy to a permanent location. So I'm still
left with wondering why when using FF, these files don't show up in
the Disk Cache.

In my experience, FF not only re-names the files, but also removes any
indication of type from the name, i.e. no .mp3 extension on your music
downloads. All the data is there in a file with total jibberish for a
name
and no extension. Try searching by date and size...

Also my FireFox does not use the default cache location as
described above. Because I updated to Firefox from Netscape
my cache is in the inherited location:

C:\TEMP\NScache\Cache

If you can't find your cache you may just want to search the drive
for a folder named cache.

Glad I could help.

Regards IE's temp files, given that it's a MS product Windows hides
stuff from the end user. Likewise the history folders are not
displayed in their native format via Windows Explorer. However if you
drop to a command window you can navigate to the folders if you know
their names. And like with Linux, you can use the tab to autocomplete
folder names so even if you don't know their names, you can tab
through the possible options (even though they won't list when you do
a dir). Then you can see the true folder structures. I appreciate
that this is an aside to FF so won't elaborate on that any further.
Just an interesting FYI given you touched on it.

Easier than that, in about:cache under FF it tells you where the cache
files are stored. Also you can check in about config for the location
of the browser cache defined with the preference:
browser.cache.disk.parent_directory
you can read more about this at
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Browser.cache.disk.parent_directory

If you do not have that entry, then the default path which I provided
in my earlier posting applies.

Thanks for all the info JB. I appreciate it! Thanks to you, too,
gabor.
