In Camino, there's an X on each tab to close it, but you can also add a
"close tab" button to the menu bar.

In SeaMonkey the menu bar button is all there is (I prefer this).

In Firefox you can set it either way through "about:config."

In iCab you can set it either way through "settings:"

Is there some way to hack Camino to make the X's go away?
(I close tabs accidentally too often)

I don't think so, at least I am not seeing it.

I wonder if there's a way to add a line in the about:config editor...

without fully understanding how to write in XUL that is

In Firefox, there is a context menu to add lines into about:config. I
tried every way I could think of to get such to come up in Camino, but
no success.
