I am running Thunderbird 2.0.0.21 on Ubuntu 8.10 64 bit version and when
I try to install Lightning 0.9 I am told that it is incompatible with my
environment and that I should contact the author.

Any suggestions on what I might be able to do?

Thanks

Hello Jonathan,

you could try the 64 bit build from
<http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/releases/lightning0.9.html#linux-x86-64builds>.

Ensure that libstdc++5 is installed on your system before Lightning
<http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/lightning/system-requirements.html#linux>

The other possibilities include using the Lightning 0.8 package from
the Ubuntu repositories or building Lightning yourself.

I installed them from the Synaptic package manager, the Ubuntu'ized version. I tried the 0.9 version (downloaded from the add ons site I believe - maybe i didn't get the 64 bit ones) and they didn't work. Wasn't able to create any calendars.

This usually happens if libstdc++5 is not installed before Lightning
is being installed. The 64 bit version is not available from
addons.mozilla.org but from the link above. Did you follow the
advice and link mentioned above?

Me? No. I didn't. I fixed my problem by installing the Ubuntu (0.8 I believe) version which works good enough for me for now. What's in 0.9 that I gotta have? I'm curious.
