I have a Google Calendar and I subscribe to with Lightning (0.9, TB 2.0.0.23) on Ubuntu 9.04 64 bit. I subscribe to is using CalDav. Most events show up with out much problems. But some events don't. For example, I have one today @ 2Pm-4Pm. I can see it in Google Calendar but I cannot see it in Lightning. Tried reloading the calendar - no difference. Still doesn't appear.

Further, I delete an event in Lightning and refresh my Google calendar. That worked. Now from the Google calendar I delete an event and move another one, refresh my Lightning calendar. No go. Doesn't notice the changes!

I have also seen this issue as well and have never managed to isolate
the cause. The only solution I found to refresh the calendar and see the
changes was to stop and restart TB. And even then some changes were not
reflected. I run TB (2.0.0.23 and Lightening (0.9) on WIN XP machine.
The interesting fact is that the updates always appear to get to Google
Calendar (and then my iPhone) but not always to Lightening.

Using TB3beta4 with Lightning 1.0pre for Google via CalDAV. A second
installation is TB 2.0.0.23 with Lightning 0.9 and Google Provider, both
on Linux.
There are a number of birthdays (events repeated yearly), which I do see
in Lightning 0.9, but not in Lightning 1.0pre.
Deleting the event in Lightning 0.9 and re-creating it with Lightning
1.0pre will make it visible for both versions. Strange ...

This is my fear. I've had a number of problems with TB3 that has made me determine that it's not ready for prime time - at least not for me. Of course over time this will change I guess. I also feared that Lightning 1.0pre would be solving some of the problems that I see right now. Does 1.0pre work with TB 2.0.0.23? Last time I looked I didn't think that it did.

Here's another failure. I have a recurring "todo" entered as an event on Friday afternoons to submit my timesheet. I'd have it entered as a task if recurring tasks worked correctly. In any event, first problem, editing this single event shows me http://schemas.google.com/g/2005#event. Why?

Secondly it shows me Etc/GMT+7 for a timezone.

Correcting both of these and selecting Save yields http://defaria.com/tmp/Lightning1.jpg

Selection Discard my changes and reload does nothing.

If I select Submit my changes anyway I get http://defaria.com/tmp/Lightning2.jpg

I made the change on Google calender itself and then attempted to refresh my Lightning calendar but I did not see any change. Restarted TB/Lightning - still no change. Attempted the modification again and even though it say MODIFICATION_FAILED my calender was updates as per the changes I made on Google calendar!

I have been using TB3 and Lighning (nightlies) on Ubuntu 9.04 for
several months now with Google Calendars using CalDAV.

I have to say, I have had none of the problems I used to see with TB2 &
Lightning 0.9, such as it doesn;t save recurring events and the dreaded
"MODIFICATION_FAILED" errors.

Apart from a couple of nightly builds with bugs (to be expected)
TB3/1.0pre has been very reliable with Google from our perspective.

I'm not sure if this helps you to narrow down your problems or not, but
I wanted to make it clear that it has worked virtually perfectly for me
for several months now.

Hey Alan. My problem with TB3 and Lightning 1.0pre is the TB3 part. Maybe TB3 has finally become usable for me. I don't remember all of the problems I had but I believe one of them is that I'm on a 64 bit machine and there isn't a 64 bit version of TB3. Add to that the fact that many of the extensions I use rely on 32bit libraries, which I don't have so therefore they don't install (I think Lightning was one of them). Other problems were:
Switched to TB 3.0b2. I used to use compact headers, where there was only one line at most in the header with a little twizzle thing to expand it when necessary. That doesn't appear to work anymore. Where did it go?

Also, I love the TB Change From and Fcc on Compose Extension but it hasn't been maintained for quite some time. I use Nightly Test Tools to enable it and it worked in prior versions of TB (Well it worked most of the time but failed quite often). In TB 3.0b2 it doesn't work at all. Activating it causes TB to not be able to send email at all! I've tried to contact the developer of this extension but he doesn't respond. Why doesn't TB allow you to at least set Fcc?!?

TB3.0b2: Check for new messages at startup and Check for new messages ever X minutes doesn't appear to work. Is this a known problem?

I run an IMAP server for my personal email and I have a Gmail account. I use Show only subscribed folders on both. On my server it work (Dovecot). For Gmail however it doesn't. Any ideas?

Glad it works for you. Just curious, do you use different TB/Lightning
installations to access Google Calendar, or only a single one?
I used to use TB2/LG0.9 on both, Windows and Linux, as well as
TB3/LG1.0pre on Windows and Linux. Both versions of LG were used to
write to the Google Calendar. I had little luck with the Google Provider
add-on and LG 1.0pre. Therefore switched to calDAV at some point, which
feels stable, but still seems to have a few issues as mentioned before.

The new header pane isn't everyone's cup of tea, but there's an
extension to restore the previous behavior.
CompactHeader - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/13564

As far as I understand it, there have been a lot of changes to the
extension API in TB3, so don't expect every extension compatible for TB2
only can be made functional for TB3 by bumping it's maxVersion no. or
using Nightly Test Tools for this.

No problem here for IMAP accounts using TB3b4.

That's nice to know but I still prefer 1 line to 2 lines of header.

Yes this is what prevents me from moving forward.

No problem here for IMAP accounts using TB3b4.
That may have been a b2 or b3 issue that was fixed in b4.

I have TB3/Lightning on three machines. They all run either Ubuntu 9.04
or the Karmic Beta. We do not use any proprietary software (like
Windows) on our machines at all.

I have 8 calendars on Google; some shared between colleagues and family.

As I said, it has been much better that Lightning 0.9/TB2. My wife is
still in that version and has a few "problems" like recurring events not
being created, and TB2 chewing 99% processor cycles for unknown reasons.
I will probably move her to TB3 this weekend now it's getting near to
release and is more stable.

Is she using the latest version of the Provider for Google Calendar
extension? Creating should be possible again in version 0.5.3 and
newer. <https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/4631>

Or does she access Google Calendar via CalDAV protocol too?

You can set it to show only one line of header, see

Unfortunately that is not my only, nor my major objection to moving to TB3.
