I experience a problem with time zones in citadel which was first posted
oct/11 by Mark on uncensored.citadel.org.

Hi,

The strangely encoded character in the data was due to misconfigured
thunderbird. I fixed that, but the problem remains. I investigated
further and found out that NO timezone-errors occur if
- I create a new event with a desired date and time
- select settings "view timezones" and change the timezone displayed
from my local timezone (Berlin/Europe) to UTC
- save event

This as a hint. Why does this happen? Does it happen only to me?

you write to the m.s.calendar and also to the citadel-support and
because of that: which app is generating the event with that TZ in question?

Also changing to UTC doesn't help here, an event with UTC doesn't have
internally a TZ string.

Hi Günter,

That's the point. I don't know who's throwing that message. I think it's
lightning because if I have a look at the source of the mail
(calendar-item) everything seems to be okay.

I wrote also to citadel-support, because there was a related report in
oct/2011 on the citadel-mailing-list.

The error message is created if an event references a timezone but omits
the timezone definition and it doesn't match any of the built-in
timezone definitions.

In your case the VEVENT component references
"itadel.org/Tzfile/Europe/Berlin" but as you can see no corresponding
VTIMEZONE component is supplied. Based on the name I think the event was
initially created using the Citadel groupware server.

You could edit the event and reassign one of Lightnings built-in
timezones to ensure that a correct VTIMEZONE component will be added.

If you have an item like this:

it's definitely generated by Citadel groupware server and as said before
I expect they don't write UTF-8 format!
So you can't be sure there are other glitches as well!

It's a problem we have seen with other calendar programs as well. As
long as those don't respect the RFC you are in a bad shape to combine
those with Lightning (or others like ReminderFox).

I attached a sample event created by lightning, transfered correctly to
the calendar-folder on my mailserver, read out via IMAP and saved as
file. If I click on that item, lightning reports an timezone error as
before. Timezone is "Europe/Berlin" in the file. Thunderbird reports:

Think there is no attachement, not with both postings.
Anyway.

Check with all your operations the file/data encoding! As said ALL have
to be UTF-8. If you are on Windows, normally it's NOT set for it! So if
you store to "file" -- what ever it means -- be sure to have UFT-8.

By the way: This is independent of the citadel-mailserver. I'm writing
this EMail from my gmx-mail account now with the correct vcard as
attachment (timezone Europe/Berlin) and if I click on that mail in IMAP
TB, lightning throws the timezone error as well.

Help please. Nobody experiences this error or is just nobody using
lightning as calendar?!

Hi, d don't know if mailserver and IMAP can handle iCalendar data. Maybe
you can check the event in Lightning after its creation, what is send to
the server resp. what is received on the server, and what is send back
from the server.

How do you access your calendar? What protocol / calendar provider is
used? Depending on this you might see the necessary information in Error
Console after enabling the advanced preferences "calendar.debug.log" and
"calendar.debug.log.verbose". Or you could check the server logs for
information about send/received data.

After further investigation I'm convinced that the timezone-error (see
latest mails on mozilla-supp...@lists.mozilla.org) this is a
more general thunderbird problem. Look:
- I disabled lightning in thunderbird, restarted the application.
- I pointed on one ical calendar item, whose content is now shown as
normal mail-body in TB. It reads

WITHOUT ERROR NOW! Why happens this? So at least I think that not
Lightning, but Thunderbird itself causes this problem and lightning just
can't read the data TB sends it and then throws error messages. I'm
using TB 13 at the moment. Occurs this to someone else and is yet fixed
maybe in newer versions?

As an addition: It could have something to do with the header of the mail.
I created two identical ical-events, one as a new mail, saved as draft,
the other one was created by lightning and synced with synckolab to the
imap-directory.
Both files have an identical and correct body, but different
mail-headers. Maybe there is the problem?

The mail is marked as encoded as "quoted-printable", which means that
any unencoded '=' sign begins a 3 char hex escape sequence such as =3D
for an equals sign.

But in the actual mail body, the '=' signs in the vCard are not encoded,
so upon reception any correct mail, news or other MIME client will try
to decode the next two chars as hex digits, which either gets the wrong
result or fails halfway through. "=EA" thus decodes to character 234,
"=EU" fails and can result in anything (Thunderbird falls back to a
lone "=", dropping the chars it tried to decode as hex, resulting in
"=") "=YE" fails early and can result in anything (Thunderbird falls
back to a lone "=", dropping the char it tried to decode as hex,
resulting in "=E").

So you need to look at the code that incorrectly uploaded the vCal
mime part, or at some mail server bug that tries to reencode on the
fly and gets it wrong.

To clarify:

For the example vCal item, removing the "quoted-printable"
header line would make it OK.

But for any vCal item which would otherwise not fit within
the RFC822++ limits on allowed characters, line length etc.,
this would not work.

What would work every time would be to actually *do* the
quoted-printable encoding when there is a reason to, and
to set the header according to the encoding actually done.

The definition of how to do the encoding is in one of the
basic MIME RFCs. The iana registration for the "quoted
printable" encoding should have a reference to the RFC
number.

The problem is that the plugin says it uses one encoding
and then uses another one. It must say what it does and
do what it says.
